I still hate winter, but today is a nice day. Cold, only about 15 but the sun is out and no wind which is amazing. I snow shoed around and took pictures. Here are some:


Only three boys ventured out to say hi. Two Orloffs and a Basque.


My path to the coop used to be straight until the guys parked the snowmobiles right in the way.


My path. Pristine snow except for the field where the snowmobiles all go through. It won't last, they are digging out the snowmobiles now.

I just wanted to say that I just bought my incubator!!!! It should be here mid February. Most likely in a week and a half.

I am thinking of maybe hatching Coturnix Quail and then chickens. Does anyone know a good place to get some eggs? I live in Muskegon. someone said there was one in Zeeland? Do they allow pick up? I am willing to drive up to 2 hours to pick up eggs.

Yes, Townline allows pick up. Heck, you can just walk in and they'll help you. They close at 4 pm though.

It looks like I just found a home for my roosters, and 3 hens to make room for my cochin project. Yay!!

I am thinking I want an Orpington hen/pullet too though..anyone have any pretty girls they are selling?

Just had one of my husband's PT's call me. It seems when he goes for therapy he has been telling her about my chickens and she wants to get started. So I went with her through all the basics and what she needs. My husband told her I KNOW my chickens!

I also told her about BYC.

Watching these little chicks has been very entertaining and educational! After a couple days of having them they started to scratch around in the wood shavings, now after a week they are doing the run and try to lift off dance. It's amazing how quickly they get their feathers. Their wings are about 3/4 feathered out and their tail feathers are just starting to come in. It's great too see all the colors and patterns of the feathers.

Some of them were getting pasty butts, but reading on the forums about it, I have them in good shape now. I gave them some plain organic yogurt mixed in with some of their feed on a plate. Not only did it help them...but they loved it!

I have to build a top for the brooder tomorrow, now that the brooder lights are above the top edge of brooder.

I can't wait to see what they do next!

BRIng water to boil. Lower eggs into water boil for 15 minutes. Remove from heat pour water off add cold water and ICE. let stand a few minutes tap each end then gently push down while rolling. Rinse and enjoy. I will take eggs right out of the coop and doo this. Theey will peel just fine !! DON'T make it too difficult.

sorry bad info,,,bout the vaccine Cutlers does not carry it, just the pullorum antigen


I think the secret to getting the eggs to peel well is the ice water,right after cooking, seems to help separate the membrane from the egg


Tap, was wondering? Does using that much vinegar flavor the eggs? I use a T or so or I will use salt but have never used that much of either,

I am going to try all these ways and see which works best in my part of the country, lol
