I had my first broody hen die from constipation that i didn't catch in time because i didn't watch and she would NOT get off the nest. I would rather have lost the would be babies than my hen. :(

My next broody was a feed mill bought orpington, she brooded but i tried not to intervene and i almost lost her as well. I gave it a few days and still no eating drinking or pooping...... So i tossed her out and boy was she having issues trying to "go"! So every day at around the same time i tossed and as soon as she did her business i let her back in. Not only did the hen live, but it was a successfull hatch :)

Long and short, each bird is different and you can easily tell a broody poop. If the bird isn't pooping, she isn't leaving ( unless she is pooping in the nest, but that's a whole other can of worms!) Perhaps age has something to do with it as well, since mine were barely a year old?
But i do strongly agree with the removing of the hen and chicks because even the sweetest hen can go into a killing rage at another hen's babies!

I remember I read somewhere here on the site a kit you put together for just in case your birds get sick or hurt. Does anyone know what I am talking about?

I'm not sure where to find it on BYC but I know Terry from hencam.com has a list. It's under faqs and is something about a medicine cabinet. So sorry about your hen.

Poor hens good rescue tj sounds like lots to keep you busy.

Beautiful uggo silly. An egg turner has made a huge difference for me, no more opening and losing humidity.

Mine don't like to go out in the snow (they are convinced that they will sink into this mysterious white stuff) but i do have a lot of windows in my coop, and it isn't the standard coop for the few birds i have; very tiny flock and decent sized camper. Time to time i toss them outside anyway, wish i had a picture of them! Brings a giggle every time. They really think they are doomed too :D If i throw straw onto the snow than it's "safe" but the space between the camper's underside where the sand bathing spot awaits and the door is flown over or gingerly stepped on, usually i end up with a chicken on my head/ arm LOL That's ok, i will save them, LOL.

Too many birds in the space for sure sounds like. Glad you rescued, even a bullet would be kinder than that fate :(
Careful on the combs, could be mites/lice/ worms, especially being locked into tight quarters! Would escalate an infestation :( Poor birds.

There was one or two small windows, not nearly enough though for them to live inside. I will take some pics of them today and see what you all think. I know that I do have issues with leg mites is my guess based off the skin on the legs, or it could be from a lack of sun I have heard? I will slather them all up with some vasoline and see how we do

Rather than trying to apply Vasoline to their legs, you might find that it is quicker and easier to apply something that can be sprayed on. Also litter, debris, etc will cling to the Vasoline.

Evidently that is exactly what happened today in Russia.

I heard about Russia... I hate repeating new news cause they never seem to have their facts straight.... I saw between 400-500 injured.... Hopefully everyone will be ok.

Alright. DH and I decided to get a few more layers in April along with our meat bird order. I'm thinking 3 or 4, max. But I have no idea what to get. I have BLRW eggs coming in April, and I'm REALLY tempted to get some good dark marans eggs from another BYCer to hatch at the same time since I know I can't get good marans from a hatchery. But what else should I get?

We currently have: 5 EEs, a white silky, a mottled houdan, a GL polish, a GL and a SL wyandotte, a barred rock, a white rock, a black australorp (or possibly JG), and a cuckoo marans. Plus I have 5 roos, but those don't count. I feel like I should stay away from the crested breeds because the 2 we have now are really getting pecked on/feathers pulled by the other hens.

Here is your chance to help me pick! I'm fine with ordering from any of the bigger hatcheries since my work schedule just isn't going to allow me to drive 4+ hours downstate to any of the smaller hatcheries.

Egg turners are great if they work. When you first plug them in, and then periodically through incubation, make a note of which direction the eggs are tilting, and make sure next time you check they are oriented differently. Opa is not the only one who has had turners not work! It will ruin your hatch if not working and you don't catch it.
