Before you get started.......... have you checked your township ordinances to see if you are allowed to have them? Some people can win the battle over keeping birds, others haven't been so lucky, even though MRTF laws are present, some people in government, have their heads up their proverbial backsides when it comes to chickens.

Silly Chicken I may just hug you if I ever see you!!! You may have just saved my proverbial very large buttocks! They DID change the zoning ordinances. Do you know that chickens, goats are considered exotic?

The keeping of outside, exotic animals as pets may be allowed in the R-F District only, by
special use permit, if they don’t require the space limitations set in Section 11.02 (G). Each
case shall be determined individually by the Grayling charter Township Planning
Commission. The burden of proof for exotic animal living requirements shall rest with the
animal owner.

Animals considered to be exotic shall include, but are not limited to:
A. Llamas, alpacas, and other camelids
B. Goats, cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, geese and other common or unusual
farm animals and fowl.
C. Ostriches, emus, peacocks and pheasants.
D. Burros, donkeys and miniature horses.
E. Common or unusual zoo or circus animals.
F. Others, as determined by the zoning administrator.

So I have to pay $300 and contact all the neighbors and include any animal I may want in the future. I would rather do this upfront and hopefully be approved then to build everything, start having chickens and get a fine and have to get rid of them! I can now see my list lol I think I will just say I may want everything except zoo animals, donkey, and burros ha ha ha ha

About genetic hackle. The reason you cull is because the feathers are not good enough for tying flies, so pulling feathers wouldn't work because a vast majority will not be useable and you don't want to allow that back into your gene pool. Also you have to be able to harvest the hackle before the first molt if you are not breeding that rooster. Because of genetics birds are raised for a single type of feather and when you tightly line breed any animal you have to sacrifice something and that something happens to be that the roosters that are only good for feathers:( Now the hens on the other hand will be great for eggs during non breeding season and the crock pot if I have to cull them. I have to have AT LEAST ONE hen or rooster as a pet or I think I would go crazy with the whole idea of this. I am sure there will be more then one wink wink but don't tell my Husband okay?

I find this list funny. Should just say "whatever animals we don't want you to have are exotic". Scientifically speaking, exotic would be any animals that aren't native to the area, so pretty much any pet.

WOW....NICE! I was going to ask about incubators. I would want it to be self turning etc so what is a reasonable price for one? Should I just post items when I come across them or is there certain name brands I should stay away from?

Thanks!

I know. Except SO won't. We have had a discussion about it since she was first causing issues with my autistic son. She was being sarcastic and I kept talking to her about it and she would not stop. 2 months later SO stepped in and she stopped. There have been several other things like that. He refuses to do that or even give her a deadline. I told him before baby is born and he says she is to much help. Yep, she helps, but you know what, it is a lot of stress on me. She cannot afford to live on her own unless rent is under $300 due to her getting her self into situations. That and a crappy paying job. But she is not looking for better. *sighs*

Anyway, I may have won the chicken war.

All the chickens are there still. YEAH! Although I lost a quail chick this morning. :-(

OH WAIT.......Who's friend is this? Your DH's? Having an autistic child and another child on the way, is tough enough without dealing with a "friend" like that as well. If his friend can't find a better paying job, could it be that someone is enabling her not to have to look for anything better? Who is she helping?

If my DH ever defended another woman, friend or not, over what goes on in our house hold or she did not respect me enough to knock it the H*** off in regards to my kids, he'd be needing to make a few choices!!

Haaaaaaawwhh......

Sorry, getting off my straw bale now........
tmkuroda... it's all about money!

I thought it was funny as well! Does this mean it is going to be tough for me to have a mini farm? I know others in my area have chickens because I can hear the roosters crowing from my house. Wonder if they paid the $300 to have them as well?
