Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I sent my kiddos out to get current pictures... they came back with videos and told me to find a "still shot" in there somewhere. Pff! The wind was blowing and there was nothing but chickens running & feathers blowing around in the breeze. The whole "if you want a job done right" theory. Well, I went out... and I could see where the kids were coming from. Not a good day for pictures. Here are some pictured of the boys. The pictures do not do them justice. It was really windy today & it's HOT, so I could barely convince them to come out from under the coop where it's shady to get good pictures. They didn't want to play "show me your face". LOL. I love the brahma markings, but where the brahma would be black, the crosses are partridge lined in gold, they have bearded faces, lightly feathered feet, and the tail feathers are the black/green iridescent. The girls look the same, only less pretty (don't tell them that!) though more feminine. Their partridge accents are darker, not really outlined in gold like the boys, and they resemble the brahma more, except for the bearded face. One of the girls doesn't have a bearded face, the other does. The ladies should lay green eggs, I'm hoping.
Fluffy cheeked little cuties! And no, not 6 thousand. Lol

Oh! I didn't mean to cause so much work. Thank you for the photos. They are very pretty! When I started with chickens last year, I didn't get the draw of multi colored egg collections. Now, I'm on the look out for blue and green. ...for next year. ;)

I just noticed that a fellow Michigander is looking for petition signatures. She has chickens to help her special needs kids reach physical therapy goals and to help with motivation. The city of Perry wants her to give the chickens up after the urban garden where she kept them near her home was forced to move. Here is the link to her thread:

It would also help if you left a comment on that thread so it doesn't get buried. The more attention from other BYC folks, the better.

I also gave her a link to this Michigan thread to post a link here.

HH had some of the loveliest New Hampshires I have seen. Her Barred Rocks were great too.

5 trees down across the horse pasture fence, 2 huge poplars and 3 big cedars smashed by the poplars. One of the poplars was caught up in the treetops - a real widowmaker. I took my big tractor and bashed it until it was solidly wedged, cut it off near the base where it crossed the fence, then chained it dragged it out of the trees with the tractor. Then cut up the other 4 trees, all solidly on the ground at least. Then tossed everything over the fence. Still have the big maple by the driveway to deal with, but that will wait.

Since I had not yet seen the horses, I waded through the newly-made wetland (courtesy of the deluge we have received over the last few days) that was my pasture a few days ago, and there they were with that "Oh - Hi" look on their faces. 2 more deadfalls on the fence in the back field, but readily cleared. What a total pain!

My friends have tracked down a tent and are also clearing their down trees, while dealing with the wedding party and the rehearsal. I have no doubt they will be ready tomorrow, they are hard workers.

It seems likely that there was a downburst that we were right on the edge of, and that struck my friends place squarely. Mother Nature is awesome.

If there's a corn and it don't come out it will keep re-infecting the foot. The salve only draws out the swelling, but don't dissolve the corn. Epsom salts are supposed to do the same thing, but the iodine is better against the staph.. Makes it easier to squeeze out the corn in less advanced cases; the surgery is essentially to get all the ick out in one lump piece; it don't have to be more than a quick cut around the edges of the scab, twist and pull. Good luck, Sounds like you're doing it up pretty good :)

I signed that. As a therapist, I know how therapeutic animals can be!

The cool weather I want, the storm part, not so much.

Here's a quick video of our temporary automatic pop door. I built the mount for it yesterday and assembled the new door, sill and cover for the outside (being that the door is lighter and weaker than the plywood I had previously). We installed the motor and brain with its new programming and new batteries last night and it opened exactly when it should have this morning. Works great so far. I will be interested to know how it holds up over the week. (I will cut off the extra cord)

Can you PM me with where you found help making one of these? (assuming you used websites) I'd love to have these on my coops!!

Well, my rescue turkey laid an egg today. But then she broke and ate it. I gave her extra oyster shell, so hopefully she won't do it next time. Her feathers weren't growing back so I treated her for mites/lice, even though I didn't see any on her (She's fairly friendly if you have food but she doesn't like to be touched or handled so it was hard to get real close). I only treated her a couple days ago and I can already see pin feathers starting on her breast. Hopefully she will be back in full feather soon. I'd like to find out what kind of turkey she is. I don't know how to tell if she's a Heritage Bronze or a BBB, but I think she must be one of those from the few feathers she does have.
