Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

RaZ, can you pick up a turner for the incubator you are going to be using? Good luck, it's an extremely fun, nerve-wrecking, exciting... you get it... adventure. I never posted my incubating adventure here, but did on another thread a bit, and on a different forum. Was so much fun.

hattiesmom, About introducing new chicks... If you want one of your hens to raise them, wait for one of them to go broody, and get some fertile eggs, or let her brood on some crap store eggs until the 21 days are nearly up, and look at having day olds lined up for that time, slip the babies under her at night. You won't have to worry about integrating as much then, as mama will do it herself. I know... I have a lot of mamas. I have a pair with 2 week olds right now, a mama with 2 day olds, and soon, fingers crossed, another with 2 in a few days... I can't tell with my light if they developed or not. Bloody dark eggs... Anyway, I just make sure when it's close to hatch time, mama is in a safe spot, and I do that by tacking up plastic fencing around her nest so the other hens can not get in, fight to get in the nest, babies trampled, babies stolen and made a meal... That is the most disturbing... Anyway, that's how I'd do it. When mama is done raising them, they'll already be established in the coop, and in the pecking order. If you have to raise the chicks yourself, you are going to want to wait until the pullets are 12 weeks or more before integrating. Then they are atleast of a size to defend themselves. I have temp coops that I use for broody moms, growing out, that can be fenced off, with in the great coop compound so that integrating birds is easier. The new birds are able to be seen, checked out, but not harmed. Then I slowly allow them to start ranging together.

Hello again all,
Hopefully I'll get a couple views before morning coffee gobbles up my post.

I'm looking for an incubator that has turning, forced air, and is quite reliable to buy (preferably used)
There will be a batch of 12-24 eggs in my future depending on shipping results and I want to be prepared for the best.

Anyone out there selling?
I'm open to paying for shipping for anyone outside the Tri-cities
(Midland Bay Saginaw)

Let me know and I'll take that incubator off your hands thats too big to fit your needs or just doesn't get used much anymore.
Thanks!

(I might even take a broody Silkie or 3 after September 5tn)

It looks like I'll be getting eggs to incubate later this week.
I've never done this before and it looks like I'll have to hand turn the eggs (no turner with the bator).
Now I'm nervous...any one with a broody hen to loan out?
Been gone for several days, went back some pages, did I miss something? are you able to have chickens now? Or are you hatching for some one else?
I have an old sussex that is broody and I have no more room so she is in a cage with a fan as we speak
I just moved to harrison michigan i would like to get back in to show poultry if any one in the area has room i would like to rent some coops space
welcome!! were abouts are you? I don't have room for more but I have some sweet ameracaunas and chanteclairs that are show wothy (I think) and would love to learn more about showing.
As I sit drinking the first coffee of the day I think about how fortunate I am to be awaiting the arrival of another sunrise. The news is filled with tragedy and sadness and closer to home I am reminded that none of us are immune.

Two nights ago the lights of both an ambulance and a fire truck lit the neighborhood as the stopped directly across the street. They soon left with the husband of a girl I had watched grow up. They were at her parent's house showing how their week old baby when he experienced an aneurysm. Yesterday the decision was made to take him off life support. So young, with so much of life awaiting him and it was gone in an instant.
That is very sad, my heart goes out to that family

HH, the New Hampshire went broody this summer and hatched 2 sweet chicks, they are 3 months old and she is still mothering them, the Jersy Giant went broody and I let her hatch 2, 3 weeks ago and she has already abandond them, Go figure, at least there are 2 so they hang out together and are doing well

I have not had any problems with hawks this yr. but have seen a lot over the fields latley, must be getting ready for winter

I was always able to legally have chickens. It is just a temporary set-back that the judge failed to follow state law.
I'll hatch these chicks for a friend but I'll be done with probation before my case goes to appeal. So either way, I am going to have chickens again.

Jake, if I had not just hatched out some more CL's and did not have Swedish Flower Hen eggs on the way, I would take you up in a second. For those who have not had Delawares, they are great producers of very nice brown eggs, and nice hens to have around. The boys grow up to excellent eating size.
I agree and the ones I had were from kathyinmo's older line too. Snowflake has one of them, my favorite that I called Shug. She became broody just 3 weeks after laying her first egg!

Oh, that's wonderful! I love seeing the broody mama's with their babies. I had forgotten that you got the Jersey Giant too. I love the NH's they are such great birds.

My burning bush is already starting to change color.

By the time I get back from my trip south I will probably need a winter jacket!

Anyone care to take a pet quality silkie roo? He has a sixth toe and a kinda bent over comb that goes to his right side. He is free to a good home. He's gotten a little rough with some of my smaller girls since the big ones don't give him the time of day. Pm me if you are interested and ill send you a pic of him. If not probably going to go away this weekend...

I need some advice please... my first chick hatched around 8am. It still can't stand. I think somethings wrong with legs or toes. Its not splay leg because I have seen that before. One leg seems to curl under a little and has curled under toes. I have read about slings and boots just not sure which to use and the best way to do it. Please help! Any advice is appreciated!

My advice would be to try Craigslist. But make sure and put in the ad that you want him to go to a GOOD home, and that you want to bring him to them. I did that and finally found a very good home for my RIR rooster. I just got back from taking him there. He went to a nice couple with 3 young boys, and they have 4 hens. I have spent weeks trying to find him a good home from BYC, and didnt fine anyone interested. But it only took one day to find a home for him off Craigslist.

I know some people refuse to use Craigslist, but I have always had good luck with it. Just offer to take the rooster to the people. That way you can meet them and see what his new home will be like and if it's a good fit.
