so.... anyone got an idea on what they would sell a processed chicken for? Also... what is the going rate for heritage turkey per pound... last year I got $6 a pound!

A subject that I spent a few hours on only to negate any profit. I usually raise them just for me. This fall a girl I know wanted 12. I already had my dozen in the freezer from spring which averaged $1.10 per pound (gas, feed, wood chips, processing). I figured it down to what my truck got for mileage each time I got feed and the process trip. Anyway, I got 20 (8 for me - 12 for her). 2 died so the cost per pound went up a little. Weights were down from the 9 lb. average in the spring to 7.5 lb. average - cost per pound went up some more. In the end I sold them to her at cost (.more than $1.10). What I heard from her before I did this venture was "I won't pay $2 a pound for a chicken dinner). I didn't charge that much but I'll leave it at that. In a nutshell: I've seen costs at Farmer's Market range from $2.50 to $5.00 a pound. My formula is cost to raise and a 50% (I've seen some people use a 30%) profit margin @ average weight processed. So, every time you have product the price could (and will) fluctuate. I've raised CX for years. This was the first time I sold. Next time I'm not promising anything to anyone. I'll let people know I have birds for sale when they are ready and this is what they cost. Any left overs will gladly be scarfed up by my kids (and me)!

I got my turkey from a girl I buy from in Brown City, she does organic and I love everything i get from her, even goat soap, etc. It's not a heritage, she has them though, she charges me $2.50lb and I pay a $4 processing fee. I got a beautiful 21 lb hen from her this yr. Can't wait to eat

Have to brag a lil, my son had football awards last night and (drum roll please) Captain, FB/DE,2nd yr Varsity, All academic, 1st team BWAC, Iron man and Offensive MVP, 1 more yr to go. I don't have much $, so I'm really praying for a good scholarship for him for college. If not, he's leaning towards National Guard, which is 1 branch I don't know alot about. Thanks Precious Kitty for your help. I'm praying college 1st.

Looks like the sun is out and everyone enjoy their day, especially you precious kitty and thanks to all the veterans. We have 3 in the service now and 1 daughter has just finished Army and comin home this weekend!!!!

Had two boys go to their new homes last night. Had somebody drive from gr area and ask me to save one from a pic. So had them on the porch and apparently my DD didn't put up the cat food and when I went to stash him for his new dad this is what I found

When his new dad came I showed him the pic first. He was like figures I picked out the big dummy and love it I want the goof ball.

Yes, she is so sweet and been so helpful to me. She has some Lemon Blue Cochins for sale(not for sure if it's lemon and blue cochins or lemon blue, lol) 1 roo and 2 hens for $50, they are so beautiful. I was over the other day and the feathers to the feet and they were so fluffy, you just wanted to pick em up and hug them. If anyone is interested, go to Star Brite Farm on FB, Brown City, she really needs to sell them.

Did the coop shuffle today. Moved the blrw cockerel and 2 hens in with the pullets after moving the sex-linked cockerel into a separate pen. That leaves my grow out coop with waaaay too many birds in it but it's only for a couple of weeks and then most of the pullets and the 2 hens are going into the layer coop.

I am SO excited to get 3 full days in for the beginning of rifle season. Can't wait!
