Thanks to all for all the help-lots of good links you guys shared and hrs of reading. lol It was lice, not mites; easier to get rid of if there's a good side. Dusted all the birds (garbage bag style) had it down finally as we were getting to the last one. One of the articles agreed with the liquid freezing in our temps, so it said put a pile of sevin outside the coop door and hit it with a leaf blower, we used a compressor. Waited a half hr and let them back in after dust settled and i guess we do it again in 10 days to get any eggs that hatch. Only seen on 1 bird, better safe than sry though. Gonna make an outdoor dust bath for them under the covered part of the run to help with preventative.

Just started my baking so gonna miss the eggs

Should i wait 2 wks then after I dust them in 10 days to eat the eggs? I'll also be glad to get bird netting back up in spring, the sparrows are all over in their runs and playing in the straw n eating their food, I'm sure that's how the lice prbly got in there.

Thanks again for all the links and advice of what worked for you.

Hmmm... I have never tossed eggs after dusting. Now you have me wondering. I know it is only considered active on the chickens for a day or two. As much as I have tried to be nice to the wild birds they are the reason for most infestations in my mind. I had starlings trying to nest and they brought me the northern fowl mites.

Well, I found a few articles on here and all pretty much say the eggs are fine to eat. When i read the label as far as ur vegetable garden, it varied. Said wait 3 days to eat some veggies and 7 for other veggies, that's why I'm wondering. All in all, seems pretty safe as long as I wash em 1st.

I 100% agree, spraying a coop down this time of year would be a bad idea, that was why I suggested the bomb. But a leaf blower and powder isn't a bad idea, just make sure you wear a mask and don't breath that stuff in!!

Stacy, congratulations on your new addition! I hope his golden years will be just that!

We have a dog that started having seizures at about 8 months. We had her on phenobarbital for about a year and a half.. her seizures started to be more frequent until one night she went full on, seizure after seizure. (personally I think pheonbarb is not the best med). We rushed her to the vet and they basically knocked her out.. almost to the point of putting her down.. kept her sedated for several hours. She did suffer some brain damage from the seizures because we had to re-house break and ob train her. She was switched to Potassium bromide which worked really good i guess.... she never had another seizure after the big one... so we tapered her off the meds. She has been seizure free up until maybe this last year, and, though she hasn't had a seizure, she's been having ticks that cause her to lose her balance. We put her back on low dose Potassium Bromide, but it turned her into a zombie... so we tapered her back off. At least she can still get some enjoyment in her life despite the ticks. Her back half is not working so good these days but.. she acts like a puppy, always has. She is a 13 yrs old Cane Corso Mastiff.

Farmer, nice seeing you again, glad the baby is doing well. Congrats on the new cow! What is she bred with? If I were to get a cow, I'd love a jersey... can't wait to see her calf pictures!!

I had someone that was interested in a few of my sumatra - uggo crosses, but I looked at the cost of shipping from MI to CA....... WOW, 40$ to ship a bird, and to buy a simple cardboard box to hold the birds approved by the USPS... another 20-30$ .... not sure if it would be worth my time. wouldn't feel right charging a lot of money for mutts!

lbry... I don't know why you couldn't' use the eggs.. I would wash them really good. Unless someone else would have more information on this. It's more of a topical treatment, rather than internal. I don't know how much of the chemicals they would absorb through their skin or if the eggs would come in contact with the powder to make a difference. Maybe have clean untreated bedding in the nesting box? I've also heard of people using front line, dog flea drops on the bird. spot on the back of the neck and by the tail. I've been thinking about hanging a fabric on the coop door and put a treatment with something on that to help with the bugs.

I have 3 gallon hanging waterers with built in heaters, but I've found that the easiest to use is the cookie tin/light bulb heather with a metal bowl. I don't advice using it inside a coop so it is outside in the run, and on all but nights with near zero temperatures it has kept the water open.
Thanks. I may just switch to rubber bowls like all my other animals. Nobody else has mentioned what they do? Anyone?

The grainery store in our town didn't have the bomb, i looked for that 1st, so hopefully the dust works. I went out and turned the straw over today and it kicked it up again, I'm a lil worried w/cold temps if their in there to long, of them breathing it in. Think I will wait 1 day and put all new bedding in and I did put some in their nest boxes also, so I'll change those out tom. I'll just skip the eggs today to be on safe side till I change the bedding. Thanks
