Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

For years I have maintained a rainbow flock of laying breeds but last February decided to replace the entire flock. I initially was going to purchase just ISA browns but opted to also purchase some black sex links and I glad that I did. They are an attractive breed and lay extremely well. Since I wanted to keep my total bird numbers down I only purchased 8 ISAs and 6 BSL. Those 14 birds have given me 460 eggs since January 1st and all have been predominately extra large and jumbos. For someone just getting into chickens and wanting calm thrifty high egg production birds I suggest you consider them.
I've had both BSL and ISA browns. Wonderful producers of big brown eggs. But for my 2 cents, I'll pass on the ISA browns. I found them to be aloof and unfriendly in a mixed flock. The BSLs are great egg machines and they are quite friendly and easily handled. I also think that the BSLs are prettier than the ISAs. I think that they are better as a dual-purpose bird as they are bigger than the ISAs.

It's nice that there are so many breeds available to suit ones particular needs.

They are really cute! Where do you find these awesome birds? Our pet stores around here only sell fish.
I guess I've been lucky. Then again, I do get around to different areas. Sometimes I just get lucky, like with the BAs.

An emotional day for us. We just arrived back home after travelling through some nasty weather, and back home, with 13 new additions to our coop. All layers, all named, and all loved, and now re-homed with Cindy and I.

Sounds like there's a profound story behind this that I either missed or we haven't heard?

Everyone has been griping about the weather and rightfully so. As much of a grump as I am, I tend to embrace all weather and turn it into something, even if it's just emphatic reports of what's going on. But today I decided to get out the video camera and editing software and came up with this:

Ok I am way behind. Can't keep up with all the posts. If I replied to all I want to it would be a couple of pages so I'm going to condense it.

Congrats an new hens, chicks and CANARIES.

Seriously I really learn from everyone here and appreciate all of the information and little tidbits of wisdom and humor thrown in. It has made a very long winter much more bearable. Even if I did not mention some specifically, everyone here is great!

Meet Leven (Dutch for "Life" and pronounced "lay-ven")! We brought her home from FFH just tonight before they closed and she'll be meeting her sisters bright and early Tuesday morning! I just can't contain my excitement! DH and I have all our professional camera gear out plus the phone, and I'm texting everyone saying "I'm a Mama!"

I'm so happy to officially be joining BYC with the addition of our first baby girl Welsummer!
