Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Just came in from the coop, and my extra MMCMurray Fayoumi cockrel is starting to crow! He's 28 days old today! It's too cute, he's tiny and thinks he's really hot stuff. Mary

I'd like to see that. I've had 5 boys now, and all of them started crowing around 7 weeks old. None of them sounded right. But 28 days, I bet that is cute.

Has anyone checked out Townline Hatchery's website lately? I was just on it; it's nice to see it updated. But I was looking at their listing for 'Araucana - Ameraucana Strain'. Under product description it very clearly states that these are not Easter Eggers, but a pure bred Ameraucana. You think this is true? My two EE's from last year came from them, and they are definately not Ameraucana's. But I would like some real Ameraucana's... you think they changed their breeding stock maybe?
I don't know - but since EEs are crosses with Ameraucana for egg color (that's how I understand it) you could get some that look close to standard. Here is my "pullet" who decided to be a roo from them...he looks pretty different to me than the standard EEs I got from them. But I really don't know, just learning myself.

He's a pretty boy. I actually would love to get a black and white bird; I bought a silver-laced wyandotte for that reason. But I'd like an EE in those colors. I guess I mainly want the Ameraucana for the blue eggs. :p My two Townline EE's lay lovely light colored mint-green, and my farm-bred EE lays a darker sage-green egg. But I want blue. I have no interest in showing or anything.

Mine from Townline lay blue, green, olive - no pink, tho'. Guess it's the luck of the draw on that!

If he doesn't work out here (I have five roos) I'll let you know :)

There is no standard for EE's...they are by nature a mutt.... no telling what breeds they cross with hopefully a real Ameraucana or Araucana.

But I wonder if anyone has ever gotten a true blue egg from an 'Ameraucana or Araucana Strain' from Townline, or any other hatchery?

I don't know much about colour in eggs or the what means what with the breeds. Lavender, wheaton, chocolate, slate or whatever is beyond my ken.
I ordered a pair of "Ameracaunas" from a national breeder last fall. The chicks came from a contract breeder in Texas. As littles, they looked nearly identical until they got their feathers, then they were noticeably different. The nice thing is that they lay a blue-green egg. Some days the eggs look more green and other days look more blue to me.

From the same breeder, I also got 2 BOs. One lays the standard brown/tan egg that people expect. The other...well her eggs are what I would call "pink". Then there are the 2 cuckoo Marans. Cuckoo is a colour. Right? They look like twins but their eggs are quite different. They lay at different times of the day and in different spots so I can tell what egg came from which bird.

Now add in the Wellies that I got from TSC 12 weeks ago (Townline source), they are supposed to be dimorphic as newly hatched. I picked up 6 pullets and a lone male. Turns out that I have 2 cockerals, both have the black chest feathers (I think aart described that) and they were sparring today. So of the others, without black chest feathers, one has a very prominent comb and wattles, more so than the obvious males. But when I offer treats, she/he/it does the hen squat. I suppose the only way to tell is if and when she lays an egg or crows.

I don't have a real point here. I'm just kind of bragging about my flock.

I do from a few of them. But they are the partridge coloring types. I wonder how/where/what they breed them as they are local. I know they import their guinea eggs, I wonder if they get their eggs from somewhere else and hatch them. I looked around and didn't see any breeding operations, just the hatchery and storage looking buildings.

I've read a couple of papers that suggest that chickens are at least as smart as toddlers. How does that compare to dogs?
In particular, one Golden Retriever.

As I roto-tilled the garden, the hens were right there scooping up worms and whatnot. Right with them was my GR and she was eating worms side by side with the hens.
