Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi all. I'm brand new to the forum and to keeping chickens and ducks. I have 5 chickens (waiting for more clear indications on sexes) and 2 Pekins. I'm located along the central-western shore of Michigan and for anyone in the area, you know how difficult it has been to get my babies outside for good! Late frosts and lots of rain!

Nice to meet you neighbor. I am about 45 minutes Northeast of Muskegon. I think that's central west coast!

Welcome, Wonky! Trust me, you're going to make plenty of friends here in the chicken community. It's a great place for farmers, chicken lovers, and people crazy enough to own chickens in the city with a small backyard (hm, wonder who that was? :D). It's a great place for chicken info, and you'll never feel lonely knowing that you can hop right on to this website and talk to your chicken hugging buddies! Welcome to BYC!

Hello Michigan group!

I'm in West MI, near Grand Rapids. I'm just now planting a chicken salad bar for my 7 girls. I was wondering if anyone had luck with growing their own lettuce. spinach, etc for them? I was thinking they would eat it all way too fast. Much faster than I can grow it.

Also has anyone used beach sand for a dust bath? I live about 10 minutes from Lake MI and can get lots of free sand. I was thinking of making a dust bath area with some clean beach sand but didn't know if it would be good for them.

Thanks!
I have 2 salid bars in my run, they are all based on this design, http://www.fresh-eggs-daily.com/2012/05/diy-chicken-salad-bar-giveaway-from-my.html?m=1

In one of them I planted chickweed, https://www.horizonherbs.com/product.asp?specific=408

In the other I planted a cut and cut again mix from Nichols Nursery, https://www.nicholsgardennursery.com/store/product-info.php?pid758.html

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

I got my run completed and its way bigger, safer, nicer for the feather babies. I made a 3x3 sand box for them and they love it. It took 4 days to do a total tear down and put the new one up. The flight netting took all day yesterday alone to hang. That stuff was a pain to work with. But its all done and I have LOTS of happy lil birds.

I took pics and can post later but im so happy and proud I did all by myself.

Spitzboyz, hello neighbor! I am about 30 miles NW of Muskegon. Dixie Chick, thanks for the welcome! Mindylee, we topped our run with chicken wire and boy that was a pain in the neck! Congrats on doing it yourself. :)

I love that we all call Muskegon "our west coast".

My family all live up and over that way.

Yes, west coast certainly does cover dozens of towns! Since I'm new here, I don't want to break any rules or social norms. Some groups don't like to be anywhere near specific when talking about where they are located. I didn't know if this community was like that or not.

Besides, without being able to show you my hand to point out my location, how else can I explain it? LOL
