Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Egg production has been off for a few days now. Only getting green eggs from the EE's.
One Marans is sitting on eggs from PK. The other went missing on Monday. Now I find that she has been stealing brown eggs from the BOs and is sitting on 13 eggs. :th Stupid broody birds.

I just literally laughed out loud.
I ended up putting Maia in a large dog crate when she was broody...with the door closed. While she wasn't stealing eggs, the others felt the need to "give" her more!

Since I found the nest today I'm going to assume that the eggs are still edible. I know that they are not fertile. Now to break the broody.

Well i'm not scrambling to find a processor for my meat birds. The place I used last year is unavailable until basically August, and the OTHER place we took a few cockerels to I wasn't that happy with how they cleaned the cavities out (AND they cost a lot more). I hate to resort to craigslist to find someone (we have about 2 weeks before I'll start getting nervous because of their size/age) but it looks like that's what I'm going to have to do. We *could* do it ourselves, but DH doesn't really want to mess with it and frankly neither do I. Not for almost 50 birds.
Fremont's too far probably, Miller's Amish. That where I go. Price went up to 1.75 per bird but I'll never do another one myself unless I'm starving.

A friend in the area mentioned that the Amish will slaughter birds for around $2 each when I said I would never want to do it myself (before we even got chickens). I'm in Shelby, not too far from Fremont. I wonder if this is where he was talking about? It's not like the Amish maintain websites... lol

you may have to PM farmerboy (Daran) as he is not coming to CS, but I think that is correct, he has Icelandics. He is in Cedar Springs.

there are Amish north of Greenville Mi also that do chickens. $2 2yrs ago

contact your TSC or FFH they may know of some Amish near you, You might even put a "looking for some one to process chickens" sign on the bulletin board.

Stupid broody birds.
I know what you mean, when you want them to go broody no one does, when you don't they all go

I have 4 broodys and another that just hatched 4, knowing my luck they will all be roosters

I have one that I though was due to hatch on the 15th, 2 of her eggs are now under another broody, so far no chicks from her, I can't believe they aren't fertile they were with a young roo(1ry old) hope I just miss calculated.

My silver-laced wyandotte has been doing this the past two days if I try to go pick her up. She normally NEVER let's me pick her up, so I was happy when she did this. She's a little over four months old.

The picture isn't mine, but it definitely depicts the action.

Perfectly normal. That is the POL squat aka chicken groping.

I'm really hoping to come to CS. We're double booked right now, but I'm trying to change that. If we do come, we'll bring Oliver the 12 week old porcelain d'uccle. No one happens to be looking for a small, young cockerel, eh?
