Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Holy crap! I almost lost my chickens! I heard shrill bird calls but didn't think much of it. Then my older chickens started making noises and then I heard shrill crys. I look and see a hawk trying to get my girls!

Eek I'm happy no ones hurt. This hawk was pretty small tho

I second the testing solutions to make sure your meter is accurate. At the hospital, we do control tests once a day on each of the glucose meters. Though we've got the super computer/workhorse units, and are doing lots of test during the day!
Neither the doctor nor the nurse said anything about calibrating the unit. The directions say there is an optional calibration kit that is extra. Go figure.
In my opinion I think the hernia needs attention right away and the diabetes diagnosis needs more investigation. And would it kill the doc to do something for my back?

That's true uchytil, and I can put it where I want it now too. I've always wanted a silver maple.

Funny thing, we just picked up an old wood shredder implement for the tractor...like it's asking for help.

Time to call my tree buds. I wonder if they remember me, it's been years.
Just don't get a Norway maple (Acer platanoides L) they are now considered as an invasive species..
I was talking with a friend who is a naturalist this weekend and she hates silver maples (Acer saccharinum L.) because they tend to be kind of weak. Could be that one in her yard fell into her house this past storm has jaundiced her opinion of them.
How about a sugar or black maple (A. saccharum or A. nigrum) that you can tap for syrup?

And if you need any old tree cut for firewood and hauled away, I might be able to help.

I agree with your friend Raz, silver maples are not my favorite - they grow pretty quickly but tend to be weak. (red maples, by the way, are toxic to horses if the leaves are ingested).

Sugars are lovely trees, native, hardy and beautiful in the fall. Andgive lovely sap.

Hmm, I wonder if chickens could be classified a therapy animals?

Just a heads up for everyone. Fall is officially here and with the changing season come hawk migration. Expect to see an increase in the local raptor population.

This is totally not chicken related, but very good info! If you or someone you know has a chronic or terminal illness they can apply for a $2500 grant from Hometown Health and Hospice. They are having a 5k fundraiser on October 18 where an individual or family will be chosen to receive the grant. This is open to any Michigan resident. Please apply and don't think that there might be someone more deserving. Everyone is deserving! Must apply by September 30. Go to www.hometownhhh.com for more info! :D
