We're going to be putting in a wood burner too... hopefully it will off set the cost of heating. Though the roi will take a while with the set up and installation of a FP costing a fortune. The lady at the fireplace store, tried talking us into a pellet stove... DH couldn't get it through to her that we want a wood burner. ... until he started saying he can't cut down his own pellets, he can't split his own pellets.. he can't stack his own pellets....duh.

I love my wood burner. I haven't kept track but I think that it has paid for itself by now. The biggest expense was the chimney pipes. They were about twice the cost of the stove. My only regret is that I got the smaller unit that was rated for my square footage. While it does a wonderful job of heating the house, the wood box is not big enough to last through the night. Some mornings are a tad cool when waking up and the furnace kicks on. I keep it set at 58 degrees so the gas bill is held in check.

My advice is get as big a unit as you can afford. You can always build a small fire in a big unit.

Ya, its supposed to get above freezing the first of the week for a couple of days!!! Of course its also supposed to rain. I'll still take it. Been lucky so far in the snow department, but its Brrr out.

In the matter of a week I've went from 2 eggs from my slightly older hens to 7 eggs when I arrived home today. The younger batch of hens has decided to start laying now that they're all confined to their coop and run. They all refuse to go out unless I shovel for them. Spoiled bunch.

FYI i told my friend about midwest propane and this year she finally checked if out. They meter and fill monthly vs tank fills- which means never out and no all-at-once bills. I believe her budget plan is $150 a month year round vs over $400 a month last winter!!!!

Not sure; i don't have propane personly. Came from a friend; so far everyone who has used tbem likes the monthy meter. I am pretty sure they are the only ones to do it that way, so no harm in calling!

As to the antibiotic suggestion it was not that the bacteria themselves were resistant, but that almost every antibiotic out there is aimed at gram positive bacteria and what is going around us a gram negative one. People are losing birds! You are far more likely to get antibiotic resistance from supermarket meat than your own birds since you know they got dosed properly and you follow the withdrawal time. Supermarket meat is always showing up on the news for stuff like that. The key in using them on your animals is a clear understanding of how they work, which one for what etc. The mystery symptoms have presented as respiratory symptoms, non specific. Bright eyes but no appetite, quite a few of us that i have found had cases that started late summer. Clear mild nasal discharge with no smell, no eye discharge but the corners of the eyes show the white part/ look slightly larger than usual.

It seems it is possibly linked to a cattle shipping disease? Vets are having a bugger trying to culture it but the last one i talked to with it her vet called another and this is what he said. Odd, but there are three bacteria that could still be but one of them unfortunately is coryzoa. Mine never presented with coryzoa symptoms. To know for sure i'd have to see if blood test would for sure i.d. Either way whatever it is is all over MI along with mareks.

Oops, cholera. But might be a different strain. I will get mine tested when i can, need to know! Everyone is hale and hearty. I Do not have coop visitors, and this came well before i added any birds for the year so has to be the local wildlife/ the mice in my old coop.
