Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Wondering if other Mi people could help me. I am looking to add to my flock this spring. But I want low individual numbers per breed( 1 to 2) that are reasonably priced (am willing to pay more per chick provided I don't have to buy large quantities).. I am looking for Easter Eggers, Ameraucana, Blue laced Red Wyandottes, Salmon Faverolle, Black copper and Blue Marans, Jersey Giants, Buffs of different colors. They don't have to be with in standard, I'm not trying to breed, just have a wide variety of egg colors and pretty birds. Any local MI breeders of these breeds?

i will be buying eggs/chickens of Ameraucana, Salmon Faverolle, Black and possibly Blue Copper Marans, as well as more Buff Orphington. I have an incubator so depending on when you want them and what hatches i'm more then willing to hatch some extras if you want some. The bator holds 48 eggs at once.

On a side note anyone who lives close by and wants some eggs hatched i'm more then willing to put them in the bator, its fully automatic with the exception of adding water to it.

Are people de-worming because there is an actual worm problem? Or do you worm just because?

I just don't seem to understand treating if there is no problem.

-In a perfect world people would know when they have a worm problem and only worm then. Many people find out they have a worm problem only when they lose a bird to worms or the effect of worms. I have 50 assorted birds and its cheaper for me to worm them than it is to have a fecal (which may or may not show worms) done. Parasites decrease a birds resistance to disease, I live on a farm that has nearly continuously supported a variety of poultry and livestock for hundreds of years, It would be ignorant to assume that my birds don't have worms, even if I hadn't had fecals done.

@Trefoil
Good answer on the worming, thanks.

@Brennigan
Almond is my favorite too. So much so that I mistyped there...my shortbread is actually Cherry-Pecan (really good, highly addictive). Think I have the pic of the recipe card under my profile In the Recipes album. I love XMAS cookies, too...make about 12 diff kinds; two of which are raspberry almond based. The Raspberry Almond squares I'll be making in the next day or two are also highly addictive; I have to quickly store them out of site cuz I have & will down an 8x8 all by myself!

Seriously? We just purchased new farm gates this weekend for the goat yard.. and the billy promptly destroyed one last night.

Hi Gypsydals, welcome to BYC and the Michigan thread

As Trefoil says, having birds in confinement over long periods of time increases their chances of having parasites, as the eggs tend to build up in the environment. After a few hard frosts in the fall is an excellent time to deworm, as freezing decreases environmental worm burden, plus you eliminate parasites before increased confinement and stress due to extended cold weather. Ideally a fecal sample should be checked a few times a year to identify which parasites are a problem. If you are going to deworm without a fecal check, then use a good all-around dewormer (NOT ivermectin). I did check a fecal on my birds.

Valbazen is an oral dewormer.
