Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

So OPA keep the faith. The PICC. Line wasn't so bad and they let DH give me my daily treatments, and I had a visiting nurse come in too. I'll pray for your recovery.

So sorry to hear about your bite, did they say why it became so infected? AND WHY DID YOU WAIT SO SONG? will add you to my prayer list hoping it heals well

Which as they explained it to me entails scraping the bone till it is bleeding well which will allow the anti-biotic to penetrate.

Once completed I will then have the PICC line in for 2 months. Given the length of time I will be dealing with this I am seriously considering getting rid of all my birds. Since chicken coops aren't the most sterile places I probably should avoid going in there and I hate for Hope to have to deal with all the work taking care of them entails.
that does not sound pleasant , hope the healing is complete this time perhaps you could hire a 4H older student to come in and take care of your chickens, Hope would only show them what to do once if they are old enough to be dependable. It would be a great learning experience. you could maybe give them a start in breeding . If not I bet Hope wouldn't mind, if you are down to 1 pen, it isn't that much work, clean once a week or less depending on your set up, feed and water 2 or 3 times a week. collecting eggs is the fun part.

Prayers for a quick recovery, this has gone on long enough!!

Opa i am sorry to hear this. Maybe keep a few breeding stock?

I know it is not the way you usually keep your birds but a little enclosed hutch with access panels for easy feeding and watering would keep a trio comfortably. One of your sons could do the monthly cleaning. I know what work you put into your line.....

I can not keep any for you as mine carry crd
:(

Glambka, so sorry to hear about your injury - bite wounds are notorious for deep infections, as the mouth is teeming with bacteria and the tooth pushes them deep into tissue (human bites are even worse than those from dogs). It is especially bad if it gets into areas with low blood circulation, such as tendons or bone. Hope you continue to heal. I would love to see a picture of one of your new technique eggs.

Sam, while it would be even more unfortunate if you had to get rid of your birds, there are always more out there that you could restock with. After all, what would Harlan recommend?

Hi everyone!

So the Missus and I are ready to make the plunge this year, so we're looking to get our first chicks. Can anyone recommend a hatchery, breeder, or any other resource to get a small starter flock in Michigan? We're hoping for 3-4 Barred Rocks and 3-4 Rhode Island Reds for a first go, but most resources I'm finding require a minimum purchase of 15+ birds.

We're in Rose Township (Oakland County) so if anyone knows of local breeder, we'd be more than willing to just drive over and pick up the chicks if necessary.

Thanks!

Glambka, so sorry for your bad bite. My youngest had to have surgery on his ear two yrs ago. Instinct told the doctor he couldn't wait. If he had waited, my son most likely would've had meningitis that weekend. He'd gotten a bacteria from a hot tub. If your doctor is worried it's serious! I hope you heal fully!

Opa keep that PICC line clean. Wash your paws lots! A friend of mine had one while she worked in a microbiology department. Talk about a nasty dirty area, they don't get much worse. I'd hate to see you give up something you love. Part of getting better is doing things you enjoy.

Thanks! If you wait for Family Farm and Home to get their chicks in, they don't require that many. Over in Oxford at Oxford a Farm and Garden they don't have a minimum, but you'll have to wait until late March/early April. Also Hamilton's feed in
Ortonville takes chick orders, but I don't remember when they start.

Hi Darguth, welcome to BYC and the Michigan thread

If you would prefer chicks from a breeder you may need to wait a little closer to spring, when there is more hatching going on. I think for purebreds you are likely to get better quality birds from a breeder than from a store.

Hi Darguth.
The folks on this form is where I would buy my chicks from. I plan on having some Buff Orpington chicks in the spring but nothing now. Welcome to the group!! I think you will find this forum filled with the information you'll need to be successful in you new venture.
