How long should I keep the chickens locked up in the coop for it to become "home" for them? a couple days? They're still pretty skittish being in there. I kinda startled them when I opened up the door today to get them food and water.

I'd give it at least a week....and spend as much time in there as possible, moving slow and talking low.

Anyone near Lewiston/Atlanta/Hillman/Alpena/Gaylord/Mio interested....I may have some youngster Rhode Island Red based on Kittle or Nelson breeder lines and some RIR/White Rock cross later. Depending on how many pullets to cockerels I end up with I may do a pair where I can. If I get enough Nelson line pullets to provide eating eggs I will be weeding out my 3 Kittle hens and 2 white rock mixes.

I have 15 chicks now (one is a white rock mix and will be in the weed out group.) I have been playing with adjustments to an incubator to increase hatch rates and finally looks like this time will be good (already about half beginning pips. ;):) There is one more set after this one from my Cockerel I no longer have. He actually had a heart attack when his favorite died in my arms and he caught me doing the autopsy to confirm it was the infection from internal egg breakage's. So the next is my last chance to get breeders from his matings. Vet confirmed he had no diseases so was trauma from the experience. Just took him in with my cats appt. Luckily no charge to confirm.... love my vet friend.

I can only keep one or two cocks over winter for my breeding program. Besides that due to financial and winter space limitations 40 full grown is maximum. So if once I make my selections the overage will have to be downsized.
