Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Advise!!! What should i do to get rid of this? (See picture)its been 2 days and im cleaning his/her bum several times a day by running under warm water and also using a qtip soaked in water and gently letting it kind of moisten the area. Its almost like he/she is constipated! It will stick its feathers out and drop its butt and chirp three LOUD cries and just a little poo comes out but doesnt leave its butt!!!!

That look like more than just a bit of pasty butt....clean all the poop off and take another pic of the vent.

Agrees a bit of yogurt, or some ACV in the water can help pasty butt.....also make sure brooder is not too hot.

How old is chick and what are you feeding it?

Got when was a 'day old' a week and a half ago. Theres 6 total, this one is the only one with it. They are eating dumar chick starter, same as what they were fed from where i bought them. In process of cleaning re photographing

Do you have a thermometer in the brooder to watch temps?

I did my "helper" two year old threw it away.

that definitely looks better. Give it a little while and maybe try again to get the last bit of it off. Then from there I'd try and find a way to ensure the brooder isn't too hot and try giving the little one some yogurt. My understanding is they can be prone to paste butt if they're dehydrated and/or overheated.

Looking a bit closer (I found I could blow the picture up) it almost looks a bit inflamed/infected. Maybe someone who knows more will pipe in and confirm yes/no on that.

Just put some yogurt like on a plate and let him eat?

Plus its like hes constipated.. Any advise on that? Should he be seperated from tge group?
if you're able to separate him/her for now that may be a good idea just in case; you don't want the others to get picky at the area. Try mixing a little yogurt and crumble, that's what I did for mine. They weren't particularly interested in it at first, I had to give it a little bit from my finger. Make sure plenty of fluids are available as well. If he's got a bit of an infection there, it could be swollen causing him difficulty in relieving.

You may want to post in https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures juts in case, if you haven't already. My concern is that he may need some swift intervention to keep things form getting out of control IF it is indeed an infection. I'm not trying to cause any unnecessary concern or panic,. Stay calm and just treat accordingly. Hopefully someone can pop in soon that has more experience than myself. I'm just giving you advice based on what I would do in your current position.

Quote: Good advice to post in the emergencies/disease forum...title the thread 'inflamed chick vent' or something like that.
Prep H might reduce swelling, I've read it's used on prolapsed hen vents, but not sure if you can use it on a that young of chick.

It looks a very odd shape, might be deformed and untreatable.
