Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hello, Michigan peeps!

I'm wishing to order some ducklings from Metzer Farms: http://www.metzerfarms.com/index.cfm?CustID=6034646 but I only need a small handful of them; I'm hoping to find someone who will split an order with me so that neither of us would need to pay the small order charge. I'm planning on 4 ducklings, but the minimum order is 10. Anyone interested in splitting an order with me? Pick-up would be at my home near Flint.

Please PM if interested. Thanks!

Anyone have non-firearm suggestions for getting rid of those 13-stripe ground squirrels? We have a few and they are destroying my garden. At the ends off of all of my cucumber and melon plants, and now they are eating all of the blossoms off my green bean plants. I've never had green bean PLANTS grow so well, but every spot there was a flower is now neatly nipped off. I'm soooooooo frustrated by it. I'm going to get almost no cucumbers and at this rate no beans either. They are also eating the low-hanging tomatoes in my other garden.

Edited to add that I'm not against using a gun on them, but all we have are deer rifles and that's kind of overkill. (Hahaha)

A single shot .22 rifle can be had quite inexpensively. Though finding the .22 ammunition is a challenge. That is what I use for picking off those varmints. They dig holes everywhere!

Nothing wrong with overkill if you can hit them with a .44 or whatever you use to deer hunt! Though I am sure you could use a squirrel sized live trap with some peanut butter or something. I got one with a rat trap baited with peanut butter, too, one time.

Well, the easiest deterrent w/o guns would be dog and cat poop i would think. I don't have animals in my garden too much on account of that. I just put the poop where I want it to get a message to the varmints and the deer. I just place it in strategic places around my garden and walk my hounds around it daily.

Small live trap then a very short swim in my ornamental pond is how I've gotten rid of those little batrastards.

cat poop? I have never heard of this before. Interesting! We have more issues with moles than anything. We've got a mixed breed dog that ferrets them out & catches a good number of them; however, our yard is paying the price. We have little dug up mole runs all over now.

Yeaaaaaah on the cat poop.....taxoplasmosis would be a concern for me with that. I'm having DH pick up a couple of rat traps and will try those out.....staked down so the darn thing can't run away with the trap. Don't really want to get a 30-06 out just for a little ground squirrel. ;)

Everyone loves to hate the LG's.....I've had good success with the one I have.
Bought it with 1 or 2 uses on it...it had a turner and a fan, I think the fan and turner are essential to keep temps steady.
Never used any other style tho and I've only done 5 hatches with it, just started my 6th yesterday.
there's an LG for sale near me for $50. It has a turner, not sure about fan. Worse case I could probably toss a PC fan in it.
