I'm guessing you meant that you could do Punnett squares with bbs? If it weren't so late in the year I could move my barred rock hens in with my ee rooster and get sexlinks but everyone is molting. :/


In other fun, let's play "identify the cockerels" so I don't give away pullets. Here's the trick. They're almost all ee mixes so while some are really obvious, others are NOT. 2 weeks ago I thought I had all cockerels but now I see that's not the case. And only one has saddle feathers that I can see so far.

I have 3 EEs that are black/white and i thought i had read that they are almost *always* boys. Hmmm. I know for sure that 2 are boys (one is only partially in the 1st pic all the way to the left....he's red and has saddle feathers, and then same pick there is a blue one with a straight comb and (comparatively) prominent wattles that has red/gold in his wings. If I have *that* many pullets (there's another cockerel that keeps jumping into the pen with the hens) I'm going to have to cut back double what I already have planned. Trying to sell 8 girls (1.5-2.5yrs old) and give away 2 roos that are about 1.5yr old if anyone near Benzie County wants them.

Are there any breeds with non evil roosters, or is it luck of the draw with all? We had a BO roo until this morning when he pinned down my 3 yr old helping with chores.

My Jersey Giant black star cross is the most nice thing ever. He loves his hens, is easy to catch and loves to be held.

Since he isn't really a breed, I hear Delaware roosters are nice birds.

We were just talking about roosters on the Arkansas Blue thread - have yet to see a bad tempered boy. Some breeds do seem to be more likely to be aggressive (RIR's roos for example), but but in most breeds rooster behavior seems to be quite individual. Personally I will not tolerate a bad temper rooster for even a moment.

I think rooster temperament has more to do with individual birds or a genetic 'line' of birds,
and sometimes how they are 'raised' and/or managed,
than with a particular breed.

I have yet to see a negative post on bad behavior with Bielefelder males. They are gentle giants. Both of ours are shy, but they are easy to pick up without too much squawking. My Iowa rooster sounds off like we are killing him when we pick him up...very loud and gets all the girls riled up-he does NOT get aggressive with any people or our grandchildren. Our EE boy is very laid back. We also have a nice White Chantecler boy.

I would vote for the Bielefelder boy being the best bet breed wise from our experience so far though
