Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

My 16 three week old chicks, 6 purchased pullets and 10 hatched here, are now 15.
One of the pullets got it's head stuck in run wire and died......one side of head and an eye was pretty scraped up but think it's all self inflicted rather than a predator. Adults were sounding off louder than usual and outside-unusual, decided after about 10 minutes I better check it out. Adults were all crammed under coop but broke up when I appeared...and maybe scared off predator. Might never know if it was a predator or just dumb bad luck. All the chicks have been trying to stick their heads thru the combo chicken wire and 2x4 fencing, some of their combs are banged up and the dead chick was really stuck.
But, chit! First loss like that in 2-3 years.

Removed chicken wire last night will put up 1/2 HC today, so they can come back out into the small run.
Got enough HC to line the large main run too, so I can open chick doors and start to integrate.

Livestock panels should be here tomorrow to start on hoop coop for cockerel grow out....or more hatching....or....just to build a hoop coop.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably need to touch base w/ the other 2 folks interested in doing it w/ me, and see if they want to wait or not. Anything I can do to help w/ hot temps for the CX?
Lots of deep shade...maybe fans.

Started in on my new coop today. Got a pretty good start in on it.
Sweet!
Pics...build thread?

Do you think first or second week of May is too late?
Anytime is fine. Plan accordingly. Like I said, I do fall birds and raise them out in the barn where it's cooler. I bet downstairs (1st floor) is 20-30 degrees cooler and I have a west-east open front/rear to allow good air flow during the day. If you have an area you can keep them shaded, etc. you'd be fine. I let mine free range during a bit also. I did not do any spring birds this year but may break down and do a few pretty soon. I think I still have a dozen in the freezer.

That's too bad aart, always sorry to loose a young bird, sometimes they just have no sense at all.
Thanks....have had to euthanize a few deformed chicks.... this was a bummer for sure, but easier in a way.

@aart congrats on Pic of the week! "Peek a boo " !
Thanks....I rarely even look at the home page.....it's 1muttsfan's win really, she(?) campaigned(cajoled-haha) for it's nomination...lol.

<thumbsup> :D
(tho I'm still not happy with the poor focus)

hard to put down at any age, the one thing that ever makes me think about getting out of chickens. I enjoy them so much but hate having to put them down
