I think it's less about the breed, and more the individual bird. This is only my first experience with broody birds, and so far it seems to have gone well :)

That's really cool. I have 4 barnevelder pullets right now and one is about 4 weeks older than the others. She panics when one gets out of the brooder, they all sleep practically underneath her and I had this thought yesterday that I'd wager she'll be a good Mama after looking after these other ones. :D

That's about all you can do, except get a better quality one - Brinsea's Spot Check is well worth the cost.
That's the best advise IMO. As a shipboard Engineer I was also certified as a Metrologist to calibrate meters and gauges. Thermometers are tricky. However, using ice/water mixture, and at boiling, will help you know if you are in the ballpark "at that set-point".. It won't tell you if the devise is accurate at other points though. Your advise to buy a quality thermometer is the best bet.

Getting some much need rain - a good soak! Making a venison stew, taking a day off of work, and doing whatever I want for a change. Enjoy your's!

Man I hear you on the rain! We just had a little drizzle come through, and I'm hoping for a real good soaking.

I just had my lawn brush hogged down today, I can actually see the road again :p. I had grass up over 4 feet in some places.

Started researching cover crops a bit for the garden this fall. I know it's depressing to think about, but trying to plan things ahead :p.

I'm also going to extend the garden area this fall in preparation for next year.

I found 2 little chickies outside of the coop today in a panic! They clearly roamed too far. Luckily no one messed with them, so that's good :)

We're making venison stew today as well! I always feel kind of bad for making soup or stew on a day like today. Its 90 degrees and super humid where we are. Blah. The only good thing about the heat is that the homemade bread rises fast! :p

Can anyone tell me what this plant is? I'm trying to determine if it's of value, or if it's just some kind of big giant thing taking over my tree
