Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I just went out to see if I could find any of the critters chewing holes in my kale. I didn't find any bugs, but I did catch a deer off in the corn field, eyeballing my apple trees again, and my garden. I told that deer it was welcome to visit, but it better stay away from the trees/garden :p. It can have all the grass I had hogged down today.

Glad to hear you're doing well Raz.

Yesterday about 2pm the Guineas started screaming. I went out to find a chupacabra running in my chicken yard. Ok it was really an animal with such bad mange I wasn't sure what it was. He was shot at but it was as he was running off so I'm sure he'll be back. He killed 4 birds including my sons rooster he was going to use for showmanship and my favorite hen.

It never fails that they take the nicest ones. After talking to the neighbor we believe it's a fox. It took two of his birds as well. So my free range birds are going to be locked up today. I don't think they are going to like it and the flyers will be on their own.

So we will be looking for bantam calico Cochin eggs to hatch late August into September.

So far, we have live trapped and killed 2 raccoons. We trapped one more (I think) it took off with the trap!! It's the kind of trap that grabs the paw when the reach in and it's staked to the ground. It was stakes in pretty darn well too!

that must be one huge raccoon!

Hi folks! My name is Cara and I'm in the SE Michigan area. New to chicken keeping and new member of BYC, loooooong time stalker though. I've been planning my chicken adventure for over 3 years.

I have my first 6 eggs in the bator. Day 6 and 4 out of 6 look good. 1 blood ring and 1 clear. These were shipped and are BR. I'm hoping for a 25% hatch for my first time with shipped eggs.

I have 2 production RIR, a gold laced seabright, and 4 brand new Barnevelders in a brooder. Let the adventure begin! We've been chicken owners for 2 months. Going good so far. We bought a little TSC coop 2 months ago, but quickly realized its deficiency. We are making plans now for a larger coop and run within 7 weeks.

Glad to join you! Will be reading all these posts and catching up while caring for 3 toddlers, 2 dogs, 1 cat and 7 chickies.

Hi Cara, welcome to the Michigan thread

I'm home from the hospital. Went in on Monday and came home Sunday night. Tired and a bit sore in some spots but I'm in pretty good shape. Just happy to be able to get some real sleep tonight in my own bed. Night.
That is great news! Take it slow for awhile, enjoy being out of the hospital. That is always the best feeling

so sorry to hear. We have a weasel. So far the darn thing has been getting the rodents. We are home to monitor the runs during the day. I think the darn thing got so scared trying to get to eggs in the Chantecler coop it may not try to even go after the chickens at this point. I am still seeing chipmunks around though, so either they are too hard to catch or we have a nice population of those in our yard. What is missing now is the rabbits and squirrels. Heard a lot of gunfire the last couple of weeks and not as much baying by the coyotes as usual.
Even had three turkey hens strolling in my driveway the other day. Bees are doing good so far, I need to get in there again to check out their comb drawing and to add honey supers.

Can anyone tell me what this plant is? I'm trying to determine if it's of value, or if it's just some kind of big giant thing taking over my tree

It can make great green manure/mulch, yank it and lay it down to suppress other unwanted plants in garden or where ever.
Burdock has a large, deep taproot so it will probably grow back....but definitely yank it or cut off flowers before they form into burrs.

Love the disclaimer on this post pasted with it's medicinal properties.

...or you can make excellent concrete leaves from them due to their prominent veining.
These are about 20" long.

. I know Mindylee has lots of Cochins, and nice ones I think. I am going back and forth downstate quite a bit this summer, so if you need transport for eggs let me know.
How about a very nice silkie roo? He is a beautiful bird (black and silver). Very nice manners and treats the hens extremely well. I'd like to keep him but guess who has been summoned back to court to several more charges?
