Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

This morning at work, my boss came up to me and said that he had seen a chicken wandering around my truck and roosting on the back axle of the truck. I had gone to work at 3:40 this am, and at that night the chicken had decided to roost on the axle of my truck, so I unknowingly drove the hitchhiker to work. Everyone at work had a good laugh at that. I managed to catch the hitchhiker and brought her back home. Hopefully her hitchhiking days are over.

Believe it or not, I had that same thing happen to me last summer when I ran down to the store. I looked in my rear view mirror and saw a chicken running in traffic. I couldn't find the guy until someone reported a rooster in their yard 2 days later.

Sure they weren't wasps or hornets that stung you? Bees are usually quite docile.

That's what I was thinking...those d@mn ground bees/wasps are vicious!!
its possible, I didn't really get a good look of what stung me. And I don't think I did anything that would have normally set off a bee other than just be there. With Belle I saw her kinda chase after something and then swat at it, then trying to shake it off of her paw before she started to yelp from it.

Quote: When ever I've found a ground bee nest it's almost always been when mowing, that really gets them going......
look around, after moving away from the immediate area - haha - if you're not actually chased away by several coming after you, and you'll usually see a small swarm of them around the nest entrance.
I would then lay a long stick with one end at the entrance so I could find the next early morning....
.....and I serve them their morning scalding soapy tea!

There are so few butterflies and moths, compared to summers in northern Wisconsin many years ago. Very sad. Mary

Our yard is loaded with butterlies! they seem to be loving flying SO close to danger in the duck and chicken runs. That being said, I have not seen any Monarchs this year, but plenty of other beauties. We allowed the milkweed to grow too...so disappointed.

I have seen very few bees this year either

I have seen about 100,000 bees...both bumble, honey, and yellow jackets. Well, I am sure it helps I have a burgeoning new beehive in my yard

Tomorrow we'll try a 2x4 instead. We've got to finish putting up the electric wire around the duck yard today.
We'll try adding a tree limb roost and see if they like that. I put a log from a tree we cut down into their run and they seem to like playing on that pretty well during the day.
Sounds like yellow jackets; they're so aggressive and make huge below-ground nests. I got hit by one on the back of my calf last summer that hurt like the dickens for a full 24 hours.

I have a 2x4 flat side up and noticed the last 3 nights that at least one somebody is using the roos box.

As far as yellow jackets go, they are EVIL EVIL creatures. Don't asked me about the canoe trip where we stopped for a break and there was a nest of them under the floor of the outhouse...lol
