Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi, it sounds to me like the roo with the bad foot may be frost bit and he will more than likely loose it. I had one that lost one foot and the toes off the other. He lived for a couple years. (Uggo)

Bigmrg74.... Friday weddings are cheaper.

Sure is cold. Chickens have been cooped up for quite a few days. Just too cold. But, they are surviving quite well.
Stay warm folks.

LICE!!!!!! My chickens have LICE! My favorite bantam is dead and I found Lice on her. I feel like s%*@ for not finding the problem sooner. She left behind two 10 wk old chicks but it looks like the other two hens (actual momma and sister) are already taking them under their wing litterly. Between the parasites and the cold she didn't have a chance. I'm guessing that my little roosters problem too and i just missed it when i gave him a bath. Going to clean all coops and treat ALL of my chickens as soon as I can make it to TSC and back in the morning. I'm sooooo mad at myself I'm crying. I keep my coops immculate to prevent this from happening.
At least my hubby is being supportive instead of making me feel worse about the situation.

I'm thinking sevin dusting is going to be the best option due to the cold weather I can't spray them with anything liquid due to the cold negative temps. If anybody has a better idea please let me know before mid morning. I hate chemicals but I don't see any other option at this point I need to attack this issue with a vengeance.

It's usually labeled as 'Poultry Dust' and always available at TSC in this area anyway.
So sorry for your loss! It's happened here too, a long time ago with lice, and a few short years ago with mites. Miserable!!! The wild little birds bring them in, so almost unavoidable.
I look at some of my birds with a flashlight while they are roosting, once weekly. Often the cock birds seem to get infested first, although it can be anyone. I treat if I find ONE on any single bird.
Mary
