Panic in the coop. A young raccoon was in the corner. This is the same one I saw last week. Injured or defective hind quarters. Little guy can't climb and hobbles when he walks. Otherwise seemed like a nice critter. I caught him in a tote and carried him out to a hollow tree. Treated him to some dry cat food. Told if he came back to the coop that I'd shoot him...after I get this cast off.
If that coon wasn't afraid of you, he probably has rabies. Had to shoot one here. Wasn't afraid, loud noises did not bother it, just not right. All signs of rabies. But you probably know all this.
Yay, snow is melting! Uggg.. what a mess in the yard. Lots of standing water with no place to go cuz ground is still frozen.
The raccoon isn't sick, he is lame. But if he bothers the chickens he'll have to go.
He did put up a fuss when I caught him but I kind of knew what I was doing.
It was easy for him to get in the coop, I had it wide open all day long.
I don't have a proper coop yet even though I know I have all sorts of predators around. That's not good animal husbandry.
Hopefully this cast comes off tomorrow and stays off. Then I can get to work on the coop I want to build. I can use this melting snow and mud to pick out the best place to set it.
I'll stop at the Habitat store and look for windows and such on my way back to the city.
