Tonight I'm euthanizing one of our five year old Chantie hens, one of the originals. She's developed ascites, and it's time to say goodby. One of her hatchmates isn't that sick, but looks uncertain, and may be leaving soon too.

Hi, anyone here in Michigan interested in some about month old guinea keets?
I have about 15 more than i want.
I found a nest and gave the eggs to a couple broody hens who hatched and cared for them for about 2 weeks in the hutches.
Then i let everybody out and the keets now follow either hen or their real mom who knew all along those babies in the pens belonged to her.
I am asking 5 dollars each.

Yes she did. She was gone for 2 days but rejoined the flock today.

Condolences and Kudos for not letting her suffer any longer.
Ascites(or rather what causes it) is never really treatable.
Will you open her up and take a look?
Does the hatchmate have ascites too?

I didn't do a necropsy, but definitely severe ascites, never good. i should have acted sooner.
What was funny, last night she tried to roost on a low roost bar, and one of the EE bantam cockerel though she looked interesting. He tried to mount her, and she turned around and proceded to sit on him and beat him up! Best ever! Definitely a great last act on her part. Mess with ME, will you?!
The other hen seems okay so far, sort of. We'll see.

For the first time ever, we have a group of chickens wanting to sit around on our front entry deck. Leaving reminders that they were there. It's the 'Gang of Six' the Chantecler pullets, followed by their friend, one of the bantam cockerels, who tries to get them away from that dangerous location. This group is way too brave generally, and something is going to happen one of these days...

We still have another five year old Chantie hen, and two younger ones, and the Gang of Six.
Yesterday I picked up the four bantam chicks that Bret hatched in his incubator! Yahoo!!! Our broody hen adopted them immediately, so good, and so they will be raised within the bantam group where they belong. One bantam EE- Belgian d'Uccle mix, and three Belgian d'Uccles. WANT PULLETS!!! What are the odds? Any cockerels will need new homes...
