Another good freeby score today. Vendors own all of the plants we sell. It is up to them to rotate dead or ugly stock off the sales floor. This vendor offered me some of the stuff he was going to throw away. Tomatoes, strawberry, peppermint, some herbs, and pet grass.
The pet grass was a great score according to my cats who took to it right away. Even my nibbled on some of it.
Wow how many seeds did you put in the soil for your pet grass. I got some growing for my cat

What a sight it must have been... the running.
I'm outside working and splitting wood and stacking them. This one log had a whole colony of flying ants living in it and I was just covered in them crawling on me it was disgusting.

I never ran faster in my life 😂

Was HOT out there today...87° in the coop.
Babies first foray into the run, a few have been going in and out all afternoon.
Hope they go in at dusk.
I do not want to wrangle chicks tonight...my arm is killing me from 2nd shot.

Sure do need some rain. I'm hoping we get some in the next day or so.

I had to replant a bunch of tomato seeds that never came up. I hope this bunch does, as I really don't want to buy any plants. Next year I'll know to plant about 50% extra. Interestingly enough, the seeds I saved from my Amish Paste tomatoes had nearly 100% germination rate! It must be written into the seeds' DNA that this is a good place to grow.

I was thinking if I had to pick which of my 3 hens to hatch eggs from, it would be hard to pick. The nicest, friendliest, smartest one (alpha hen too) lays the smallest eggs. The middle hen is kind of a bitch to the bottom hen, and isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but she sometimes lays the largest eggs. The bottom of the order hen is calm and usually lays the largest (by a gram or two) eggs.

I'd probably go with the nicest, even though her eggs are just getting into the "medium" size category. And also the bottom of the pecking order girl. This is something to contemplate for next year. But I can think about it for hours when I can't sleep.

How does everyone decide which eggs to set, if you just want a few new chicks?
