I always like birdseed, scratch, or kitty litter for added traction. There are a few times that I need salt to melt ice or snow where I have to walk. I have fallen a few times on slippery patches. But I don't like to use if I don't have too.
Current air temp is 3 and expected to fall to minus 5 to minus 15 tonight. I threw another bale of straw down in the coop Birds all seem fine when I went out to close it up for the night. Temp in the coop reads 12, which isn't bad considering the ambient outside temperature.

I would really like to have a fire tonight. I'm skipping it so the crew coming tomorrow can install the new wood stove. I have it cleaned out and prepped so the old stove can be taken out easily. More wood ash laid down in the run for dust baths or better footing.

Now is time for some Netflix and something for supper. I've been getting a lot of good things to watch.

I don't like the kitty litter cause the clay doesn't biodegrade very well and gets tracked into the house. I sometimes pour the scooped litter down on the road, we are on a dirt road and I figure it helps to fill potholes

That's what I do when I clean the litter boxes.

Old stove out and the new one installed.

First fire in it and smoke backed up into the house. At least I was closely monitoring it and got the smoke evacuated and the air intakes adjusted to a good working airflow. I've been watching closely for the past few hours and all seems to be in proper order. Still, it will take several more trials before I fully trust the operation of this new unit. I do have several extinguishers close at hand.

The house temperature is toasty-warm. Quite comfortable, balanced, and stable. The only thing I don't like is that there is no window to see the blaze. I'll have to find a way to have a proper fire with the doors open. AND not smoke up the house. LOL

Unfortunately it's quite unsanitary to dump scooped cat litter. Cats can carry parasites, in particular toxoplasmosis, that could run off in the water and infest other animals, and cause quite serious problems. I understand the wish to recycle the clay, but soiled cat litter should either be buried or placed in the garbage for collection and disposal.

I did not know that. I'll have to change my ways.

Hi Everyone! Read most of teh posts. I have the feed now up where she cannot reach. She is a good puppy. She will not go into a bag of trash if I leave it on the floor. But note taken from your advises.
I wanted to take selfies of each girl since now I have a new cell but it has been pretty cold.
Then unfortunately, yesterday it was 8 degrees and went out to collect eggs and thought of going out to get some more feed but as I walked in, I felt the worst episode of lightheaded, dizzy and the whole house was spinning. Prayed intensly and got to the office and checked my BP. 158/98 with 99 pulse. Called hub and hosp in AA. They advised me to go to ER but I refuse to be near any transformer of c19. Hub came and I stayed in bed. He turned the run llight on and shooked some cracked corn for the girls before they went in for the night. Woke up ok. I had a few calls from AA and even my MD who was off for the day called me. He wants me to take my BP at least twice a day and see if I have hypertensinon. I went out and back in bed for most morning. Then got up, showered and got ready for my cooking/yoga class. Got there and they took my bp and it was ok. But withing 20 minutes got dizzy again. Unknown numbers but seems like I might ahve to egt on pills fo rthis. It is very bad. I would not wish this to my biggest enemy. It is that bad. Well, need to go to bed now. Got only 7 eggs today. Hopefully, I can buy feed soon. I have but do not want to wait until the end. Also need to buy sand. Yes the sraw freezes,lol Move some from teh run into their entrance and it is frozen. Their area has been in the 20's so far.

I didn't know that either, however if you bury it, it will still get into the water; won't it? especially with wells? I can put it in the pail it comes in and put with trash.

Keep an eye on the BP, Dreamz. I check mine 2 times a day. I'm on a lose dose of HBP medicine as a precaution, says my cardiologist. At the doc office today it was 118/64. A little low on the second number. Let's hope that everyone stays healthy this year.

I'm liking this new wood stove. I can put whole logs in it and they burn more consistently than the old stove. The firebox is 4.67 square feet. I still had hot embers at 3:30 this morning.

Much warmer here and less windy too. It's almost pleasant outside. Thought about splitting some wood today. Maybe tomorrow. I'll do the cat boxes and start rearranging the living room. Or take a nap. Yeah. Nap sounds good.

Today is DH's birthday. We're the same age for a month, then I get older.

The DNA thing through Ancestry.com has proved to be very interesting. We bought the 6 month membership and have been tracing our respective family trees. DH has done a lot more than I have. I've done enough to find out that my psycho cousin is in fact deceased, of which I am very glad. (That sounds horrible to say, but he caused my family a lot of pain and heartache.)

It was positively balmy outside today: 38! Another really good thing is that one of my hens is laying again. Not the one who started and stopped, a different one. All three hens look like they could be laying, so it won't be long now. Then the only holdout will be my Jubilee Orpington. She's 32 weeks old this week.
