YAY we're all back again!!

Mostly because I have a question. I feel very silly asking but can you give roosters baby aspirin?

I don't know if anyone remembers but last year at chickenstock there was a very large Jersey Giant rooster in the back of someone's truck.





Well, we took him and his girlfriend home with us. They said that he was so sweet that their other birds picked on him pretty bad and at one point he had a sprained ankle. Well, now we think that has probably turned into arthritis. He still walks and even runs but sometimes he'll throw his legs out front pretty far. He sits on the backs of his legs because I don't think they bend well.








He is definitely very loved around here and we want him comfortable!

I managed to get the duck and ducklings back into the pen tonight and into the coop. It was pretty easy, the ducklings just squeezed through the chain link and momma was waiting outside till I opened the gate. The guineas however, refused to cooperate and are now sitting in the maple tree that hangs over the coop. Should they go inside the pen in the morning for breakfast they will be shut inside and punished for days of no free ranges. the ungrateful twits.

Look in other areas of your coop too. My Uggos were laying in the attic after they found the hole in the ceiling that Bryan showed to them. My ISA Browns like a corner on the floor as their usual spot. The BO and big BSL's like the high nest boxes, but it there is a traffic jam, I have to look all over the coop.

Our coop isn't very big (6x8) with no places they can hide eggs. We found Cuddle's first egg on the coop floor in the corner but she since has laid them in the nest boxes. They were closed off so I'm assuming that's why she laid it on the floor. I have literally searched every last inch of their outside spaces. Holes they dig in to stay cool, corners of the fenced area, under the huge willow, in the tall grasses...e-v-e-r-ywhere. The oldest did find an egg on the coop floor again tonight so we think we may have another layer now! We'll see tomorrow. We think it's our black australorp.

Uhmmm, I'm a little confused by this post. I hope you don't leave though. Maybe a bunch of us that are on are just clueless about asprin and chickens? I know I am.

OH! Chicken question. So...my Isa Brown, who to this date is my only layer, does this very odd thing when you go to pick her up. She will squat right to the ground and stamp her feet extremely fast! It's the funniest thing I've ever seen and I'll try and video it. But what the heck is that?! Tonight we found an egg on the coop floor(the IB is very good at laying her egg in the nest box) so we think we have a new layer. So I went to pick up the BA and she did almost the same thing! She squatted super low to the ground but instead of stamping her feet at warp speed she started shaking her head back and forth really fast. I'm going to die of laughing fits if this is a normal laying chicken behavior.

I'll be trying to pick my chickens up all day long just to see them do these crazy dances.

WOW! Look at those colors! He's a JG? I thought they were only in like, black or white. My neighbors kid gives half a baby aspiring to one of the hens.

It was just a thought. My coop is a converted part of my garage so there are some good hiding spots.

You are seeing normal hen behaviour! I asked the same question last year. Mine would let me massage their rumps while they danced. Got some grief for posting a few photos, but I didn't know at the time what they were doing. Some people call it POL or Point of Lay, and some call it "groping". In any case, it is normal and always makes me laugh.

When the reporter came out for the interview, I groped the hens so she could see that they are quite tame and why they are often considered as pets. The photographer thought it was a great photo op but the BSL was too dark for a decent picture to publish. The BO was in the nest box at the time and no way did I want an Uggo in the picture.
