I didn't know that about Clematis; I have a HUGE Lilac "bush" - it's taller than my house and ancient. And, I have several Clematis that I need to transplant - thanks so much for this idea!

Had an almost horrible situation last night; went to pick up hay - we had the wrong ball on the truck - DH is always super, super careful about that stuff, but he said he remembered the last trailer we used was our flatbed, which is what we used last night. LSS, the trailer full of hay bounced off the ball in the middle if I-69! OH my word, the trailer was whipping left and right...I about had a heart attack! We were SO fortunate - no one hit any of the bales that flew off, our trailer didn't hit anyone, and a semi truck that was directly behind us stopped to stop the traffice. The 2 men inside hopped out and helped us move the bales on the expressway off to the side, saying, "We knew the traffic wouldn't stop for you, but would stop for us!" Then, after we pulled off to the side and made a call to my brother for help, we started carrying the huge bales - which were QUITE a ways back - to the trailer. After carrying just 3 of the 12 that flew off, ANOTHER good Samaritan stopped & picked up teh rest & transported them to the truck for us. What a blessing! DH tried to give him some cash to thank him, and he said simply, "pay it forward." So, what could have been a potentially super serious and negative situation, in my eyes, turned out to be just fine! The chains on the trailer did their job - we only lost 2 bales that burst open, and the only damage was the post of the trailer that you use to park it (not sure what that thing is called) is bent at about a 45 degree angle. But, it could have been SO SO much worse!

Then, about a half hour after we got home, a friend from work, who I'd mentioned that I was picking up hay to, texted me: "Did you lose some hay on I-69?" I replied, "Yes, details tomorrow." She replied, "I saw it on the Flint police ops" (whatever that is.) well, needless to say, apparently someone must have called 911 - but no copes ever showed up, and my guess is that we were there probably 90 minutes. OH well, we didn't need them anyway, I just found it humerous. I'm so happy to be sitting here typing today, just like normal, though!

How fortunate for you that there were such good people out there willing to stop and help a stranger, asking nothing at all in return except that you "pay it forward." What could have been a very tragic situation really does sound like it turned out well.

Bet your DH will be double checking that ball next time though!

Thanks for all the fingers crossed everyone. I hope to hear something sometime after noon today if it is good news. Otherwise, might not be until later tonight...

Will let you know

Yup - for sure! I think he was in shock last night...when we got home & unhooked the trailer, he looked at that ball probably 4 times before we went from the barn back to the house. Poor man, I think he felt terribly guilty, though I sure didn't put any blame on him!

super multi-quote alert!!

i use these: I like them because they have multiple uses if you need it for something else, like dogs or goats etc.. http://www.tractorsupply.com/allied-precision-heated-bucket-2-25-gal-capacity-2170071
i like the capacity!!! and the price! i wonder how many watts it is.....
As for water-ers om the winter, I put a shop lamp, like a small brooder lamp with a 100 watt bulb right over top of the water-er on the side that has the dispenser hole.
Good to know we can go this low-tech if needed. I'm hoping to find something that doesn't pull a lot of power since the electric company is getting rich enough off us this summer.
how many birds exactly are you talking about?
Well, right now I have 13, and 26 in the incubator (about 20 of those are looking good 6 days in). I've got coop sqft-age for up to 30......hoping to keep it at around 25, depending on how the hatch goes. I'm being optimistic right now.
Everyone please,

Do Me A Favor.

You see, today is the 5th week that I am waiting to hear if the chicks I ordered will actually hatch.
The temperatures were so bad this summer, it really messed up the fertility, so there haven't been enough to ship.

awwww!! still no news?

I hope you get you little fluff balls soon!

My clematis got taken out when a car took out my mailbox... The roots are still in... Will it grow again?
yes! do you know what kind it was? it's actually beneficial for some to get hard-pruned every year. clematis are pretty hardy though, and i don't doubt that it'll be peeking up againsoon.

When you are done with the pumpkins, I want them! I am starting to look around for pumpkins and squash to feed the livestock in the winter months.

FB, check with farmers that sell Halloween pumpkins, I get them free from a farmer by me but you have to get there early Oh. they sell till Thanksgiving so I think it was get there early AM day aft TG, cause they ditch them as soon as they can to get them out of their garage

I for one do not consider Lilacs weeds - they are beautiful in the spring, and a favorite of birds all year round. If yo plant Clematis at the base the vines grow up into the lilac and bloom later in the season - very pretty.

Good luck Brethren!

Thank God you and Dave are ok. I know how serious that deal is. Everytime I hauled something with a trailer that was always my first fear. When I went up to Jakes to get Blue I was whipping up I75 when all of a sudden there was a trailer with a jet ski all over my lane. I swerved to miss the trailer and jet ski and still ran over some part of the jet ski. It came unhooked from some guys truck and he never even knew he lost it until a ways up on 75. I just thanked God there was no one in the lane directly beside me because you don't even think when trying to avoid something like that. Thankfully you had good people to stop traffic and help you. The thingy that he bent is called the jack .

WOW!!! That is crazy! Sounds like something you'd see on a movie... So glad that everything turned out well, though!

Wynette, so glad it turned out OK - made my heart jump when you started your story, a man I knew was killed by a trailer that jumped the hitch due to the wrong size ball - it was a car carrier with a car on it, when it came off it swerved into his lane and he hit it head on. Thank godness the chains on your stayed attached.

Does anyone have any Dark Campbell or Khaki Campbell duck eggs for sale? Prefer ducks that conform fairly well with the standard of perfection. I have Dark Campbells and want to add some diversity in the lines. Also looking for any age Pilgrim Geese. Thanks!
