Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I had a huge owl try 2 days in a row to get my cat.........at 11 in the afternoon..........while he was tied to my camper stoop and i was sitting there! That was scary. Haven't seen him since, but they sure do keep tabs on what happens in their territory!

Holy crap!

I was up from 3am until 530am while baby fussed and cried, tried to fall asleep, and then would realize he was falling alseep and start to fuss and cry and wake himself back up, and repeat.

How is it possible that something you **** well know sucked can, such a short time later, make you miss having a baby?

Well after 8 hens, I finally have found a sweetheart, my SIlver laced wyandotte, I have 2 and the smaller one is a honey, she sat on my lap today and I was just petting her, she is so very pretty.
BUT she got pecked enough to draw blood, what should I do about it? I know you guys talked about something blue, can you mention that again and where I could buy some, I have a TSC pretty close, hoping they have what I need.

greenmimama - Blue Coat, many feed stores carry it, not sure about TSC, I would call ahead and check. Good luck!

Wow... Lots of posts to catch up on. Those silkie chicks are adorable. All the baby chicks are cute. Chickens are just awesome!! I think my BO may be getting close to laying. She spent a lot of time in the coop today and was checking out the nesting boxes.

I'm having a lot of eggs break in the nesting box. I have plenty of straw in there, but they swirl it around "nesting" and end up laying on the wooden bottom. What should I put in them to keep them from breaking?

Not genetic - Kimmie & I have been talking about this, and the pullets that died are hatchery stock - the cockerel was from me. So - completely different bloodlines.

I have not personally had any issues with my Giants; I also checked in with other folks who got chicks from me at Chickenstock, and no one else has lost any. So I don't think it can be e genetic issue.
have you taken a stool sample to a vet? could be some kind of parasite, very strange to be only affecting 1 breed

some times you have to go and look, or ask for some one that knows chickens. I called 4 different stores last yr looking for a med. they all told me they didn't have it. went and looked and sure enough right on the shelf

Caz, I had that problem, too, and it didn't matter how much nesting material I put in, or what kind it was. Eventually, what worked best for me was to cut up a piece of carpet, (it was a large sample piece we had on hand,) and put it in the bottom of all the nest boxes. Then I put the straw in on top as usual. When I clean the nest boxes out, I take the carpet squares out, beat them, and put them back in with fresh straw. When they have gotten more than just dusty, (like a soft shelled egg breaking

) I just spray them with the hose set to power wash and set them in the sun to dry and sanitize. I haven't had to replace them yet, but when the time comes, I plan to check the dollar store for a cheap rug.
