Today should be a good day for working outside even if it is a little cold. Raz, powertools are indeed wonderful things and I strongly suggest that each time you operate one you count the number of digits you possess. Then count them again when you finish working. If the number is less than you started with it would be adviseable to reduce the amount of beer.
No shooting today but.......the guns always ready and waiting for the next critter who messes with the chickens.
I have baby button quail!! I knew she had been sitting and marked it on the calendar but this is a week earlier than I thought. I saw she was out of her hut and it was moved a little so I went to fix it and found two little chicks! I'm so excited. Missy quail and Sprout are parents. I'm just not sure if Sprout may be a danger or not.
I had about 20 out of 55 hatch and lost 6 of them before they were a day old. Some never made it out of the egg and the ones that did died shortly afterward. So I ended up with 14 out of 55 eggs. And I have a cabinet incubator with the automatic humidity control and everything. Didn't ever need to touch it except to put eggs in lockdown. I have no clue. Must be a bad time to hatch eggs.AND
My hatch was a near-failure again. I don't get it! We candled and floated them since they were over-due and absolutely nothing was happening so we cracked them all open to see if they were under-developed or whatever, and 4 of the 11 had pipped internally or tried to pip internally and then died. I've got 3 little wyandottes in my brooder, but I'm really discouraged because they are the only 3 out of 3 DOZEN that made it!![]()
I have only hunted deer and I don't do that much, so many other things to be doing. I have a compound bow but I don't pull enough weight that I would feel comfortable hunting with it. Mostly I keep the guys company when they practice. It seems the critters come to me or rather in search of my chickens. It is good to hear of other gunslinging women - I think all my friends and family think I am crazy for deer hunting but then I am near Grand Rapids and not the UP where it is probably more common place. Do you hunt, or just shoot critters intent on having your chickens for dinner? I haven't had to use my crossbow on anything going for my chickens yet but we keep them pretty contained and our collie is a pretty good varmint repellent.
I put my 13 bantam mottled cochin eggs from Amy at West Knoll Farms in the incubator this morning! I am super excited about getting some cutie "Halloween chicks".
I could shoot a critter but I can't even stomp a mouse, I feel bad up close and personal.Good Morning! Chilly out there.
Last night whe DH let the dogs out at 11pm, I hear him yelling at the dogs. Went to see what was going on and he tells me there is something in the yard. Saw a motionless hump in the yard. Took the broom and poked it. Something was playing possum!! Us city slickers don't have guns, so DH got a shovel and beat the poor thing to death.Sad to see, but my chickens are more important than that varmit. Hope there ain't any more.![]()
