Okay, more than once I was left searching for a twig in the coop and run that was skinny enough to fit through the hardware cloth, strong enough to lift the latch, and curved enough to reach it, before I finally got around to attaching a wire and running it through so that it could be undone from inside. Lol. Definitely a good idea.

Does anyone know someone in North Branch with Rouens and Cayugas? I found someone on craigslist with ducks available at the same age as my boy, which could work out perfect...but when they called me back, he doesn't sound real...ugh...professional...maybe he is just phone shy or something? Idk, maybe that's a weird question, but to me it just seems like if you are selling something you should try to be friendly and helpful, and even though he returned my call, he seemed kind of stand off ish, and almost, annoyed, I would say, that I wanted to buy them...I mean...why are you posting an add if you don't want them sold? WWYD? Do you think everything could still be fine and maybe he just doesn't have great phone etiquette? Any red flags I should watch for? I didn't think of any of that stuff when I bought the first 2 because it was a spur of the moment descision because they needed a home...

Thank you! That's a bummer about your Wyandottes, they're so pretty though! I'm glad you told me, I was thinking about getting some! My oldest would really like a Cochin, mainly because of their fluffy appearance. Do you know if they're pretty friendly?

Welcome! Our Wyandotte is the friendlier of our 2 hens. Proof:
Hazel (the chicken) has decided that W. (the girl) is hers. They cuddle every day.
Our other hen is an Australorp who is nice, but just likes chickens more than napping with kids on the lawn. In the spring, I hope to get a Cochin. I like how they look, and I've read they're really friendly.

well good afternoon!

I haven't been around much for the past week or so and the first post I make this morning was a bee-atch-y one. So I apologize for being grumpy, I just get so frustrated sometimes. Hal thinks it's pretty funny, the toad.

I've been busy. I think. I swear I can't remember half the things I've been doing. Coiling hoses, cleaning up yard debris, including cans and plastic bottle the dogs love to run around with mucking out the coop. Keep the wood stove loaded when Hal is out hunting (no luck yet) , the usual housework. It's chili season, I've got my 3 qt crockpot filled as of 15 minutes ago. Then of course, it's the many times a day dog walks. (walk number 2 is looming I hear Ziggy outside getting impatient). I seem to be having a terrible time getting the kitchen/dining room cleaned and organized! I'd almost gotten the table cleared off when I had to load it up with stuff from the bookcase so I could move it and get to the wires in back when one of the speakers from the entertainment center quit. What is it about flat surfaces and clutter? I don't even want to think about the coffee table!

Well I only came home with 5 chicks. Little EEs hopefully since she said they all hatched out of blue eggs.

The week-olds didn't peck at them, but seemed a bit shocked by how boisterous the little ones were. BIL had a New Hampshire and a Lav. Orpington hatch out today. The NH seemed pretty shakey and needed a little help getting out (shrink wrapped) but hopefully is improving. If nothing else in his incubator hatches (we're not holding our breath on that since our hatch rate is about 4%) they'll probably get put in the brooder sometime tomorrow afternoon.

I'm considering knocking the dividers for the nest boxes in the small coop out to create more floor space for the winter. Sound like a good idea? We're going to put the chicks in that coop and they won't be 20wks until mid-February. I'm thinking I can always put a free-standing nest box in if it becomes an issue, and once spring hits I'm going to try to combine the current chicks with the current pullets. Yes? No? It would add a total of about 9sqft by taking the dividers out.

Vaseline the legs if you are worried. That's it. Nothing else. But I think at the size they are, they should be fine...

Also, to the newbies - If you post a problem and the thread keeps moving along and your question is not answered, ask it again. Because either people don't know the answer and we are waiting for someone who does know to comment or the question got lost in a fast moving thread and needs to be posted again but please don't think that people don't care. This is a very caring group.

Did you ever just put a small syringe toward the back of the chicken's tongue and put the drops down the throat? That is how I do it to get an accurate amount in them.

I only use eye droppers to get it back in the throat... seem to work better than syringes for me

Just popping in for a quick second to ask a question: I just went outside, and to my surprise my rooster was on my front porch! He doesn't want to go into his coop, apparently. I'm worried that it is too cold for him to be out like this, however, he is very aggressive, and there is no way I'm going to be able to get him into the coop without being attacked. He's actually becoming a problem, because he chased the meter reader lady out of our yard the other day because she got too close to the hens. Anyway, this is the first time he has ever refused to go into the coop? Has anyone else experienced this before and if so, what did you do?
