Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I did a quick search on here and someone said they found (though I don't know where) "Start & Grow

Medicated can be fed to chicks until 8 weeks of age to prevent coccidiosis."

I would check the bag and see what they say
Thanks, but my question is more for how gently do I need to wean them off of the medicated to regular chick starter, still starter, but I seem to remember I was told to wean SLOWLY.

Hi all! I'm from the Genesee County area, does anyone know where I can buy Organic Chicken Feed at a reasonable price? I have 8 laying hens and they are all pets.

I was feeding them Purina Layena but just switched to Kent Home Fresh Extra Egg 16 because it looked like a better feed to me. I would really prefer an organic feed, but the only one I found at Family Farm and Home store was really pricy ($10 more per bag)!

Any thoughts? Or recommendations on the best feed? (Even if its not organic)

Greenmimama - Michigan State Univ. Veterinarians told me at the Poultry workshop in the spring to wean off the medicated starter like this-
Week 6 - 100% medicated feed
Week 7 - 75% medicated feed and 25% non medicated
Week - 50% medicated feed and 50% non medicated
Week 9 - 25% medicated feed and 75% non medicated
Week 10 - non -medicated feed

The idea is that as the chicks get exposed to the parasites your big chickens might have - they have the medicated feed which allows them to not get too sick and allows them to build some immunity. Hope that helps!

I am so glad this topic came up! I had never heard of weaning the chicks off the medicated starter. The instructions certainly don't mention it. My chicks just turned 5 weeks and I'm gradually allowing them more time out in the shared/segregated coop with the older hens. Very timely - thank you for sharing the info!

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense! and yes I figured at week 10 you meant 100% non medicated feed :)

Yes please let us know if we can help!
I hope he is a fast healer and is not in pain. Feed him lots of Jello!!

When I was 6 we were in a terrible car accident and my left femur was broken. I was in a body cast for several weeks before I could learn to walk again.
My mom made me velcro sweat pants.
When I was relearning how to walk I had to wear good running shoes with sticky rubber soles, so I would not slip. I tried to get away with not wearing them and guess what... I slipped.
I hope he is able to get to the bathroom...that was the worst part about the cast...
