Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

what a gorgeous day! I'm checking the weather ot make sure it's not supposed to rain and then I'm getting the spots on the outside of the small coop painted! And possibly clean the yard up some. We're having a birthday party for the oldest on Monday, and I have all of my dead hanging baskets sitting in the yard, and the isolation pen from when we had to doctor up the marans chick is still on the porch! So much to do!

What is a reasonable expectation for egg production for my wyandotte that just started laying? She layed sunday and monday, but not yesterday. We're giving them 2 extra hours of light in the evening. 4 eggs a week?? 3?

Prayer for an easy recovery for your DH, Brethren.

Yes the drakes can eat layer also. When I had the ducks before giving the girls to MommaK, I just fed them the flockraiser also.
Thanks!
So sorry to hear about your DH Brethren! A horrible and stressful situation to say the least! Many of the sporting goods stores (MC Sports, Dunhams, etc) should be starting to carry those side-snap pants since basketball season is almost here. You could call the store and ask about them so that you aren't driving all over the place. Even Walmart and Taget get them from time to time.

Working up the want-to to make a fire in the boiler today. DH turned the propane heat on this morning because the house was down to 65, but that's an expensive way to heat especially when we've got 25+ face-cord just sitting there! Maybe I'll make some oatmeal for the chickens too.
Just out of curiousity...why do people make oatmeal for chickens...I'm new to the chicken/duck thing, and I'm already finding myself wanting to give them a treat now and then....is it healthy, helps them warm up, just a treat? I'm intrigued (and have a giant container of oatmeal in my cupboard. ;D )
there is a guy near chelsea that is getting rid of 3 beehives... still active w/honey. If anyone's interested let me know.

Man! I was just telling my husband I wanted one! He looked at me like I was nuts though...neither of us are crazy about bee's though so I don't know that I could handle retrieving the honey! lol!
Hi all! I'm from the Genesee County area, does anyone know where I can buy Organic Chicken Feed at a reasonable price? I have 8 laying hens and they are all pets.

I was feeding them Purina Layena but just switched to Kent Home Fresh Extra Egg 16 because it looked like a better feed to me. I would really prefer an organic feed, but the only one I found at Family Farm and Home store was really pricy ($10 more per bag)!

Any thoughts? Or recommendations on the best feed? (Even if its not organic)
I JUST got chickens, my dad had them for awhile though, and he was telling me there was a good place to get feed on Baldwin Rd. in Lapeer/Metamora...Starke or Stake brothers farm....something like that...he couldn't remember the exact name, but said they mix it all there...not sure i they grow the stuff too...might be worth checking into though...even if it isn't organic (I don't know if it is or not) it might be more natural.

I don't really know *why* either, I just know that I've read about people doing it (seeing it pop up a lot with winter discussions) so I decided to make a batch yesterday. They weren't impressed. I halved some grapes and threw them in at the end so they would also be warm, and basically they ate the grapes and barely touched the oatmeal. I don't think I'll be doing it again.

Oh OH! I meant to share pictures of my flock!!!!

We haven't named any of them except for our drake we already had...DH doesn't want to name them....we'll see I suppose!!! I'm already thinking of some though. ;)

Here's our two banty frizzle cochins? That's what she called them, then just cochins, then just frizzles...they are pullets and I not a chicken expert so I have no idea if that's right...they look like they could be it to me...but yeah, any help would be sweet. ;)

Then my New Hampshire girl

My Ameracauna? Easter Egger? You tell me!

Three Ladies in front of the window...the New Hampshire wouldn't let me take a pic of the Isa by herself...she kept running in front trying to hog the spotlight! lol!

and one of the ducks...the two we got are pretty skittish...my drake is just joining in...so they were hiding in the corner

Oh, and my first eggs!

and to show the size of the brown one...

I would say it is a small egg...I have pretty small hands too.

Thanks for looking! Sorry for the pic overload!

I don't just cook up oat meal and give it...
I cook the oat meal with peas at the same time, add a bit of cream and quartered grapes once the oat meal and peas are cooled down. I never have any left over. Do the same thing in the summer, only wait for it to cool, add the grapes and some dried worms, then freeze it sandwiche baggies and give frozen. Doesn't last long either cuz it thaws out. I am thinking of putting corn and some shredded chicken in for the winter this year.

Today is beautiful and it's about time we had a nice day. I spent 2 hours dusting all the chickens and guineas except 3 escapees. I saw mites on only two birds and one guinea.

But I dusted them all anyway. The chickens are also loving the nice weather. I call this batch my puppies because they follow me everywhere, so this is the puppy pile. M2M that is Benny in the front and you can see June's head in the second one. They are sweeties.
