Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Oh good! Glad to hear that. Yeah, we are only about 15 miles from Lapeer, and I'm in Lapeer at least twice a week usually between grocery shopping and the kids sports. :)

Brethern, glad DH is home!!! Hopefully you'll still have enough to do a decnt combover by next week...deep side-parts are in, right? lol! (((Hugs))) and prayers for a speedy recovery for him.

Our run is almost done! Yay! Hubby and my 6 year old finished it last night while I was at practice, coaching...it looks GREAT! I have to put the chicken wire on it, but then it's done! Woot! I'll post pics after I finish it. My son was SOOO proud that he helped and it turned out good that he took me outside with a flashlight when I got home just to show me! lol! Alright, lots to do today and less time to do it, so I'm off! :) I hope you all have a wonderful day!

If I may suggest, use hardware cloth at least on the lower sides of your run to deter predators, they can bite through the regular chicken wire.

Butternut is so good! It actually makes a good pie.

Butternut is the only thing I use to make pumpkin pie, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin bread......I bake it an ovenload at a time. Cover all my cookie sheets with foil, scrub the outside of the squash, prick a few holes and shove them in the oven. I let them bake until they are good and soft. We set up a table in the garage (it is usually plenty cold by then) and set the pans of squash in the garage to cool. When cool, cut in half, scoop out seed and discard, scoop out flesh. I bag it in 2 cup servings as that works for most of my recipes. I always freeze it plain so I can use it for either savory or sweet recipes. Yum!!

I will never forget someone telling me about living near the Libby pumpkin factory and saying "truckloads of squash went in...and cases of pumpkin came out."

I have to say it, oh my gosh. RAIN RAIN GO AWAY!

I can't believe I am saying it. After the long summer drought, we need rain. But not all at once! The past two weeks has been rain rain rain rain rain rain rain bit of sun rain rain rain rain rain! The sun was out for a little while yesterday, then the rain came back! My ducks are very pleased with the rain. The chickens? they're OK with it because it gives them access to earthworms.

My goats are under the belief that rain is actually sulfuric acid. Any contact with the wet, and they think they're melting. They also believe it is all my fault. They'll stand in the doorway of their shelter yelling (cursing) at me!

Tuesday turned out to be a nice boat ride.

The salmon and trout have yet to acscend the Huron river and all we got for our efforts was a few smallmouth bass. We took my friends drift boat

and while he prefer it over our normal drop back fishing method I much prefer having a motor. I am getting much to old for all of the rowing that a drift boat entails. I did enjoy the day and saw several bald eagles and the evidence of one very optomistic beaver.
That tree has a diameter of at least 30".

HA HA HA!!! I literally laughed out loud when I read that!

X2!!! :gig

My cows just stand in the rain like they need a shower. lol The chickens too, but the pigs are just getting muddier.

I wanted to use hardware cloth, but it is just not in the budget right now at 3 times the cost of chicken wire (or more since we got some for free from my dad) however, I did not come to this decision lightly...my dad has had chickens for YEARS in our area without a predator issue, AND my coop is rather close to my house AND I have an outdoor cat that is really good at running off predators, AND I have a VERY large dog (great dane) who pee's the perimeter of my yard and we haven't seen our garden touched by so much as a chipmunk or squirrel or our trash ever messed with...and lastly, they will not be out at night, they will be locked in the the very secure, fort knox coop (I put hardware cloth over the floor before putting the floor boards down, and around the lower half of the coop since we used mostly upcycled wood i wanted to make sure it was very secure...the run is very sturdy and heavy...BUT once we get the funds we will add a layer of hardware cloth on the bottom half most likely. Thank you for the advice though! :D

Interesting! I would actually like to try Butternut soup...I just have only had it served like mashed potatoes...it was ok, just not my fav....I would definitely use it in baking though, and I never would have thought of using it in bread or pie! I'd be up for trying that too! I love making fresh pumpkin pie though.
