Good morning, looks as if today is the last nice day for awhile. This morning I need to spray my orchard with pre-emergent oil. An orchard is a lot of work and some days you think why did I plant all of these stupid trees. Then fall comes and you start eating apples and it all seems worthwile. Being able to press my own cider has really increased the enjoyment and if you turn some of it into apple wine and drink enough of it you'll find yourself wanting to turn the entire yard into apple production.
Hope is getting ready for work but really doesn't want to go. She would prefer to go with Granny and I. Granny is really excited about our visit to YakLady's house. She really has been looking forward to this since I told her that once the snow was gone I would take her.

I have a ghetto chicken tractor.

All it is is an old cedar raised bed, and hoops with netting. It works like a charm though

You may have a ghetto tractor but you also have an "uber" brooder.

That's right! It was named by Cass.

I wouldn't put the two next to each other. It would really make the chicken tractor look ghetto.

What are you spraying the trees with? We inherited some apple, pear, and cherry tree. We aren't sure what to treat them with.

Please pass on a

to Granny, and Hope

Good morning all

My son has gone to the laundry mat to dry his clothes so I seized the opportunity to get on the internet.

I am glad to see the post about spraying apple trees since DH bought a couple of Honeycrisp apple trees last year. I knew that they had to be sprayed but did not know when or what to use. You never know what you are going to learn on this chicken site!

Good morning everyone. I haven't posted in a while but I just had to this time. My 11 year old son has been wanting a puppy. We were going to wait until spring to start looking but I happened to be cruising the shelters, rescues and the internet and found what might be a great match. We've been monitoring his responsiblity level and how he handled sitting his grandparents dog this month. He's really done wonderful so I firmly believe that his own puppy/dog would be good for him. Since he has allergies, as does mom, sister and grandma, we had to find something small and something hypoallergenic. I was leaning towards a Shih Tzu. My family used to raise Lhaso Apsos and my brothers family has Yorkie terriers. Both those breeds were ok but the Lhaso are expensive and hard to find. My families Yorkies are tempermental and I wasn't sure if it was a breed thing so I have been looking for a Shih Tzu - plus they are on the small side

I happened upon a couple looking for a home for their grandparents 10 year old Shih Tzu. Grandma/grandpa passed away and they took in this poor girl. Unfortunately she's not a good match for them. Their two male Jack Russells are torturing the poor girl, won't let her eat, go potty, etc. Surprisingly my son fell in love with her picture and what they told us about her. I was quite pleasantly shocked. He told me, "Mommy, I just want to make sure she gets all the love and care she deserves. She's been through a lot. I want to take care of her for the rest of her years." I can't tell you how proud that made me. What a good kid.

Now if his daddy only felt the same way. Understandably, DH is leary. He thinks she is too old, etc. I've asked a lot of questions and was given a lot of encouraging information about her. Let's just hope they were honest. I am optimistic.

Now the waiting game. We couldn't meet her this weekend because they are busy with a wedding. So now we have to wait until next weekend to meet, hopefully, the newest member of our family. My poor son is dying to see her and to bring her home. Poor boy has to wait........and wait........ and wait. Mom too

We use to use kiddy swimming pools. I have upgraded to a stock tank that leaks, but we share it with the neighbors when they get pheasants in May. so I am looking for one for myself.

One of the quickest ways to make a brooder is using a cardboard like material called thermoply. It is use in new home construction to pan cold air returns. It is inexpensive and comes in a 4x8 sheet and can be purchased from Home Depot or Lowes. Simply cut it in half and duct tape the ends together. You will now have an enclosue 2' high with a 16' circumference which means it will be 5' across over which you suspend a heat lamp.
I used this a couple of years ago. We placed several layers of newspaper on the floor and sat the ring on top of it. Then when we need to clean the pen we would place more newspaper next to it. Hope would grasp on side and I the other, lifting the ring about an inch of the floor. We'd then slowly walk the chicks over to the clean newspaper. Roll out the dirty paper and we were done.

Lovemychicklets my Grandma has a shih tzu she is 12 and still very spunky. Good dog, she was pottying on the floor a lot. This is due to my Grandparents not seeing well and not taking her out as often she needed. They have gotten better about it now that my mom pointed out that she had been pooping in the house. So now they take her out more often and she does pretty good.
