Today as I returned from my mailbox carrying a package from easttxchick that I knew would contained the emu eggs she had promised I couldn't help but wonder why it was so heavy. As I opened it a bunch of yellow peeps lay inside looking up at me. Along with with was what she called a "taste of Texas". What a wonderful surprize to find spice seasoning, brisket marinade, butter & jalapeno marinade, hush puppy mix, fish batter and even some jalapeno peppers. I then unwrapped two of the most beautiful dark green eggs imaginable. Her kindness and generousity has touch me deeply and is something I will not soon forget.

We have our first Muscovy egg!
I'm bouncing up and down.up and down. up and down.

The girls have been dragging their little bellies around, so I knew it should be happening soon.
Silly girls did not use the big beautiful nest boxes I gave them.
Nope "she" laid her egg in the bucket with some silly chicken eggs.
The chickens don't normally lay in the bucket, but guess they wanted to keep the little egg company.

I placed the egg in one of the nest boxes so hopefully we will find the next one in there.

What a nice suprise Opa.

Zyphercreek hope everyone feels better soon.

The turkey we got from TSC are doing good, all but the one they didn't think would make it through the night. I am still having to feed it by hand including water. If I hold it up to the waterer it pecks at the water but doesn't drink the same with the food. It is almost like it doesn't want to eat or drink. I have been helping it along since Thrusday evening. I think we will have to cull it. I was hoping it would perk up and start eating and drinking on it's own but it's not.

I can relate to the LACK of eggs - We have 27 hens and have only been retrieving about 8-11 eggs per day for a couple of weeks now - we have about 5 who are moulting....hopefully that is the answer to the strike on supplying our customers...they've actually had to go to Meijer's and buy Egglanders because we can't supply all of our friends with the eggs they so love!

On a separate note: We will be bringing about 18 new hens into the flock over the next 4-5 months...presently we have 27 hens and one rooster...We're considering adding another rooster....don't have any experience in this area - input welcome! I'm thinking about SLW rooster...I read that they are a rather calm bird and the crow is minimal.....thoughts? thanks!

Nancy, unless you intend to start hatching your own chicks you really don't need another rooster. If you do then I would get a rooster of the breed you would like to hatch. Pure breed chicks you can sell without much difficulty. Mutts not so much. I may have a welsummer rooster available and you could get a much better breed. Reasonably quiet, calm in demeanor, and easy on the hens.

oooohhhh how you tempt me Opa! Thoughts on introducing the roosters to one another? The one we have now NEVER has been aggressive towards us....would the two of them have a dual? I have a separate area that I could use for breeding with the ones coming in at the end of the month....hmmmmm

Can't help much with the rooster thing. I don't have very good luck with nice ones. The one I have now, a CM, is what I would call respectful which I guess is as good a friendly. I do have a little bantam rooster that the CM chases all over the yard. I keep him because my human girls love him and he has his 1 hen (standard size) that follows him everywhere. I have had great luck introducing new hens to a flock through free ranging.

Good evening all,
Vicki, congrats on the new puppy, how exciting. Are you planning on breeding them when they are older? Waiting on pics

OliveHill, sorry about the loss of your chicks. How are the others doing? Are you sure it is Newcastles?

Mom2 I love the pics, is that a turken in one? My DIL's brother had a hedgehog too.
hustonn, Opa gave me a very nice welsummer cockeral last year. You would not regret it.
