I think I will try and be there. My brother in law and I are probably going to give it a go again with chickens at his place. He plans on getting some sheep/pigs/goats and penning them in around the chicken run for added protection. Then we just need to repair the net over the top and we should be good to go.

How is your rainbow flock?

The birds are doing well. I currently have 22 in my large fowl flock and 13 in the bantam flock. I've added more coops and increased the size of the large fowl coop since you were last here and will be building another one or two more coops soon. The next time you're out this way, stop in, you know you are always welcome.

Morning all! Made that long haul back to NY again to pick up Remi, he has finished his training and I brought him home a baby sister! Am I crazy or what??? Pictures soon! Traffic was horrible going out, friday afternoon going through Toronto was no fun, then later we hit a major traffic jam, turns out a bad accident had shut down the other side of the highway and almost shut down our side. Took us an additional 4 hours to get there! UGH!

Anyone interested in a Maremma puppy, these people are awesome! She normally has most puppies sold before she breeds, but had 10 deposits before breeding and her female only had 7 last time, so she bred 2 this time and the 1st female had 13 and the second one had 7!! WOW!! I decided to get another when I was there in Jan, they were just 2 weeks and the second litter was due any day. I think she has a couple of pups still available. She raises and trains Maremmas, she keeps the livestock to train the dogs, not the dogs to keep the livestock safe. The dogs are her primary concern, the other animals are just a bonus. She has an amazing understanding of these dogs and gets dogs in for training and retraining from all over and even has people who fly in to do training sessions with her. There were people from Australia there right before us. Yet, there are very down to earth, non assuming, homeschooling, hard working, honest, farm family. She has imported several dogs from Italy, including the sire to both my dogs and is looking to import a few more this year.

Sorry to ramble, just excited after my trip. Hope this cold snap doesn't last long.

There's a bird and small animal swap in Estey Michigan next Sat. It's a small town between Pinconning and Beaverton, north of Midland.

Anyone else going?

I had put 19 eggs in the incubator, due to hatch March 26. Only ONE was fertile! So, just so that chick isn't an "only child" DH gave me permission to get 2 chicks to raise with that one.

I had to put 5 more eggs in after culling out 18 to keep the turner working. Out of those 5, two were fertile and developing, so I get to manage a staggered hatch. Advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well if they aren't Muscovies again they should hatch at the same timeish?! Why don't you set them with your other scovies? or (like you told me) get another incubator!!!

You cant use my own advice against me! lol!
I WILL put them in with my scovy eggs..and see what "WE" hatch. Are you going to help me re-home all these duckies? Because you know, I only want three.

Since you are my hatching buddy, you really really are half-owner to these eggs coming too!

Oh let me add...

I REALLLLY am mad at the weather! I WANT these chicks out of the house, I want them out of the house...i want them out....

AND someone dropped off a box at my front door last night. It was labeled for my husband. In it? A hedge hog.

hahaha! We never get normal things abandoned here.

We're down to 3 of the original 5 d'Uccle chicks from Family Farm & Home in Alma. I've been debating calling the store all afternoon as I think the chicks had New Castle Disease. I understand they don't guarantee their chicks -- they'd be crazy to given the circumstances -- but New Castle is contagious and they've got a BIG potential outbreak on their hands if that is what it is... would you all call? I'm doubting they would take me seriously but my conscience tells me I should at least TRY.

I've got the remaining 3 in a new brooder with fresh bedding, disinfected dishes, etc. I'm hoping the other three did not catch it yet, but only time will tell I suppose. *sigh* They still seem rather robust at this point.

I guess of all the times I've gotten hatchery and feed store chicks such a thing was bound to happen sometime. I've been very fortunate not to run into any issues in the past.

I can totally relate!! They have a two more weeks, then they are in the garage! It's not the chicks that are driving me crazy though. It's the kids with the chicks! If I could figure out a way to lock them out I would. My DD brought a chick to the table the other day, and I don't mean the roasted kind.

There is a woman that works at Livingston Feed and Seed out in Howell that would love as many 'scovies that we can bring her. I did not discuss $$. So I wouldn't worry about them having a place to go. Besides, I think that my hubby is fully on board for the ducks so I could probably keep a few more than I originally thought!!

Oh...And good advice is good advice!!

Hope everyone got to enjoy the great day. Started off a little dreary but ended with dinner on the deck! I love spring!!
