I went out to collect eggs and look in the incubator and though I could see a pip. An hour later there was no doubt. Now I have a fully hatched chick and 41 other eggs sitting there. It's going to be a long night. Besides wondering how the chicks are doing I'm concerned about Granny's little bichon. She had a badly abcessed tooth. The tooth is out but the infection is rampant. I've got here on penicillin so all we can do is wait and hope. Granny is resigned to the fact that she might not make it but it still is going to be difficult if she doesn't.

Opa,

to all the new folks, a lot of new ones in the past few days.
Sorry to hear of all the losses of chickens, turkeys and eggs.

I have been away from my computer for a few days since my hard drive died but it is fixed now.

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!!!
Yesterday was BEAUTIFUL! And I was off work...

Im off work today too. Waiting for the sun now.

I planted tomatoes, peppers, and my rose bush yesterday. I reinforced my new fence- and I begged my husband to hot-wire it. Of course, he didnt but I may run out to TSC to get supplies if its safe. Think they are out of babies by now?

Exactly a quarter mile from me is a House that is a quarter mile from the animal shelter---------- they have about TWENTY DUCKS! I saw them running around in front of the house yesterday. And they had the biggest coolest looking goose. I want one. I want one and I want to name her Bertha...lol. I really want one. I am so happy to see my neighbors having illegals like me.

This was a very cool goose. ENough to make me google hatching goose eggs. I sure dont want to do that, though. I am still reeling from the disappointment of the Muscovy eggs.

I hope you all have a wonderful day- get outside and enjoy any sunshine that comes your way.

Sun shining and chicks hatching. What a great way to start a morning. As soon as it warms up a little more I think I will work up the garden and start getting it ready to plant. The large fowl are going to be unhappy with losing access to it but they've had their turn with it and now it's ours.

Welcome to all the newbies!!!

Mom2emAll -- Our TSC has been out of chicks for a few weeks now if I remember correctly. You will probably be safe.

Opa -- I hope Granny's little dog pulls through.

After the trip to the greenhouse yesterday morning we spent the afternoon working outside. We planted the two peach trees I bought, got our watermelon seedlings out in the garden, planted some cucumber seeds, DD's cabbage plant, weeded three of the raised beds and one of the front flower beds, mulched the greenhouse area garden with spent straw from the hog house, and last night I left the rest of my seedlings out on the deck and hoped for the best. Luckily, they still looked good this morning. Today we'll get most of them out into the garden.

Believe it or not, but one of my EE pullets has gone broody. She has been sitting on the nest for 3 days now, and has returned to the nest 3 times after I removed her. If she is still doing well tonight I may put some duck eggs under her. I have three ducks setting right now, but the 4th just can't decide where to lay her eggs. If I could just get her to lay them in the nest we'd be doing great. The first set of Muscovies are hatching right now. I'm hoping to find some cute little quackers when I go out later. I'm trying not to bother her too much. She is still in the main coop, but her next box opens up into a very large dog cage (shepard size) that has lots of straw on the floor and plenty of food and water. The next nest should be hatching next week. Yahoo.

I've been working up the garden and the chickens follow me like puppies. They are the least bit afraid of the rototiller and I have to watch that I don't run one over.

I came in at lunch time and checked my email. My oldest son sent me a Craiglist link for a GQF incubator/hatcher with a see-thru door in excellent condition that is for sale out in "way past everything" Missouri. They were asking $125 for it. I wish he had called me when he sent the link. I called on it and missed it by minutes.

I had the most exciting day!!
I went to Grass Roots Nursery to get some cattails to plant in my ditch- and they had a bunch of golden comets there, their peacocks, and some pigeons-
in with the Peacocks, they had a muscovy male duck. Beautiful black male. He was wagging his tail and looking so friendly in his pen. These are their personal pets- none are for sale, although they have a waiting list for peacock chicks. I commented about their muscovy when i was cashing out, and the woman asked me if I wanted him. She said their peacocks wont breed while he is in there with him- so they bagged him up for me, free of charge.
I brought him home, clipped his wings and was carrying him into an area in my pen that is fenced off- well, he struggled as I went into the gate, and hit me right in the mouth- and either caused me to slam my jaw shut or hit my tooth- was too quick and painful for me to be certain- and cracked my front tooth straight up the center. "Free Muscovy causes approximately $2000 dollars worth of damage within minutes"

Anyhow, he managed to get away from me- and instantly my two hens attacked him. My turken has her eight babies, and well, Carmen is my guarddog/busybody. They were tearing him up!!!I rescued him and put him in his pen. Then, later on, my daughter and I were filling up the brand new kiddy pool for my young ducks- and he looked so interested, I let him out of his pen. Oh he was interested, all right. Not in the water- in my ducklings. Stupid me. He proceeded to tackle my poor Quackers and tried to mate her- I tackled him, he got away and then he grabbed Jax by his neck and pinned him to the ground. I grabbed him again, closed him into an empty rabbit hutch. PHEW!!! Lesson learned: I apparently lost my common sense when I got hit in the face.
I then spent HOURS building him his own area, pen, and now my babies are safe- and he is safe from the wrath of the hens.
Sevenchickens, I definitely only need female ducklings in June..hurry up June...

I planted cattails, and ferns and pretty much built Fort Knox to keep my dogs out of my yard. I let my dogs out and watched my beagle scoot right under an area I thought was secure...lol. Fixed that, finally.
Now, my house is a mess- going to clean that up, take a shower and get ready to start my week all over again.
I hope you all had a great day.
