Popping in before heading back to the fair, yesterday was another fun filled day! The kids showed their rabbits. My oldest daughter Rachel took first in her class with her Holland Lop doe and then Best Opposite Sex, then my son Sam took Grand Champion meat pen!! There were a few other nice placings, first, seconds, etc. I was especially excited for Sam. This was his first year as a regular 4-H'er, but even as a cloverbud he was always to shy to show anything. We have tried for 3 years and he would always back out. This year he was so nervous he was in tears, but fortunately his sister helped him carry his rabbits into the table and stood with him. I think this will help bolster his confidence that it is not that scary and is worth it!!

Congrats, Vicki!

So, SillyChicken, what band do you get to see?

It's been years since I've been to a concert unless you count going to see my friend's friend's band perform at a bowling alley/bar in Skidway Lake.

I tried a nipple waterer, but mine could not get the hang of it. Was hoping it would be a good solution to having to dump out dirty water everyday. Oh well.

Had a terrible evening last night...I got one of those big stinky fly traps from TSC over the weekend to hang in my run. The ones that you fill with water and add in the stinky attractant they include with it. Well, last night I was trying to catch a hen to put a saddle on her to protect her from my rooster, and wouldn't you know it, I bumped my head on that fly trap and got drenched with stinky fly water. Beyond Gross! I smelled like "Eau de Night of the Living Dead'.

DH had caught the hen while I stood there swearing, so I put the saddle on her since she was a captive audience. She was squaking her displeasure over wearing the saddle, so of course my roo was going nuts ourside the run thinking I was hurting his favorite gal. I gave them a minute to calm down, and thought everything was cool, but then when I went to go into the house to shower after the fly trap mishap, my roo ambushed me and spurred my leg pretty bad before I cold kick him away.

I know most folks recommend dispatching an agressive rooster, but the hen was squaking up a storm when I put the saddle on her, so I can't blame him for thinking I was hurting her. But I certainly don't want him to injure any friends or neighbors that stop by. I kicked him hard everytime he charged me (about 4-5 times), and then DH chased him and caught him and I held him down in a submissive posture for several minutes and carried him around for a while and "pecked" at his comb with my finger. I got a pretty deep puncture on my leg so we are definitely going to trim down his spurs so they are not so sharp. If this is a recurring issue, we may have to make some hard decisions.

We have hatched some of Wynette's Blue Jersey Giants ( B/B/S ) and the incubator was getting crowded. So we grabbed a few of the dry ones to put in the brooder to make some room. We have some silkies mixed in also, but Cass posted a few pics of the dry ones we took out tonight.

You can see the pics here.

There will be some more tomorrow morning. Now I'm off to bed. I'm beat.

Im sorry!!! However, you have just managed to make me feel better. A couple days ago, I bent down to either pick up/put down a waterer and got my head/hair entangled in a fly ribbon...nasty sticky 'covered in dead flies', fly ribbon....I was so grossed out as I peeled my face and hair free- but now, I realize, it could have been much much worse...

Glad I made you feel better.

The one good thing is I now have a new standard for "bad day". It makes those rough days at work look not so bad by comparison!

Please be careful with the liquid from that fly bait. It can kill anything that eats/drinks it.

This spring I was cutting down a bunch of last years burdocks. Just as I picked up the pile to toss in the back of my truck to burn then, My dobe came running back and SMACKthem right into the side of my temple. Now mind you I have long hair and only had it pulled back into a pony tail. Those about 20 burrs were stuck to my scalp. I had to use olive oil and a dog mat splitter to get them out. About 2 hours later I was free of them and had a huge bald spot on the left side of my head. Its funny now to think about it, but surly wasnt when I was crying in the mirror wondering how I was going to get them out of my hair.

Anyone have any adult pekin ducks they want to sell? Ones that are at point of lay or are laying? These will not be used for meat, but their offspring will.

Good Afternoon!

My daughter Rachel has been saving eggs to put in the incubator tomorrow. She had 3 dozen. Well this morning her sister came out to get her pigs milk and eggs ready for them and she used the fertile eggs!!!!! There are only 4 left

I am so frustrated right now! She wasn't thinking at 7:00am.

Oh and we found Rachel's missing Buff Orpinton, the one we amputated the wing. It was smelling real bad in the thick bushes and Rachel found the hen dead. The gangreen had spread too far by the time we amputated.

Boy it is hot outside! I am sitting here sweating in our rec room/garage that doesn't have air. So I am going to go back inside to the A/C and snap a 5 gallon pail of green beans.
