I tried a nipple waterer, but mine could not get the hang of it. Was hoping it would be a good solution to having to dump out dirty water everyday. Oh well.
Had a terrible evening last night...I got one of those big stinky fly traps from
TSC over the weekend to hang in my run. The ones that you fill with water and add in the stinky attractant they include with it. Well, last night I was trying to catch a hen to put a saddle on her to protect her from my rooster, and wouldn't you know it, I bumped my head on that fly trap and got drenched with stinky fly water. Beyond Gross! I smelled like "Eau de Night of the Living Dead'.
DH had caught the hen while I stood there swearing, so I put the saddle on her since she was a captive audience. She was squaking her displeasure over wearing the saddle, so of course my roo was going nuts ourside the run thinking I was hurting his favorite gal. I gave them a minute to calm down, and thought everything was cool, but then when I went to go into the house to shower after the fly trap mishap, my roo ambushed me and spurred my leg pretty bad before I cold kick him away.
I know most folks recommend dispatching an agressive rooster, but the hen was squaking up a storm when I put the saddle on her, so I can't blame him for thinking I was hurting her. But I certainly don't want him to injure any friends or neighbors that stop by. I kicked him hard everytime he charged me (about 4-5 times), and then DH chased him and caught him and I held him down in a submissive posture for several minutes and carried him around for a while and "pecked" at his comb with my finger. I got a pretty deep puncture on my leg so we are definitely going to trim down his spurs so they are not so sharp. If this is a recurring issue, we may have to make some hard decisions.
