Hey Lynn: I know that the Dewitt Grainery will mix feed at any protein level that you'd like if you order large quantities...don't know how much that is though...i'm thinking 500lbs! got the space? how many birds do you have?? someone posted w/in the last few days about finding feed for about 8bucks per bag....I know the stuff from the Dewitt Grainery is mash and not crumble...ours just throw the mash around and get it caught in their throats!

We got our first SLW egg today!

Not sure if mash would be ideal. We have 50 cornish x (processing on 09.17), as well as 15 or so egg layers, some ducks, & turkeys. What about Lott or Fowlerville Feed? Anyone have experience with either? Do they mix their own feed for poultry?

Keyt, what's the protein % on the layer and is it crumble or mash? thanks!

I'm almost positive it's 16% and it's crumble. The lady there is extremely knowledgeable. She said a lot of people make the mistake of feeding the higher percentage which is what the stuff in the store usually is. You probably already knew this but I didn't.

Keyt, to tell you the truth I try to avoid Mason Elevator. Their prices are AMAZING but unfortunately almost everything that they have there is mash. They have some crumbles there but NO pellets!! UGH! I had to buy a bag of their "all purpose feed" for my turkeys bc I was totally out and it was a mash that I would say 1/3 of it ended up on the ground. yuck. I go to Family Farm and spend the $11.99 on the turkey grower pellets, I definitely think its worth the extra few dollars. Plus, the first time I went in there to ask about their feeds, the guy handed me their equine pamphlet when I specifically told him I wanted to know about the chicken feed and he looked at ME like I was as dumb as rocks!

. Scratch wouldn't be a bad thing to buy there though, it's scratch.. you can't mess that up! lol

BTW, went out to Birch Run today and I was ALMOST tempted to go to the hatchery down the road that I bought my birds from to see if he had any leftovers!

Hmmm. Well, I went there for duck pellets and she said they didn't have any. I was kinda expecting that because a lot of people have told me they're hard to find. The lady there said chicken scratch works just as well and from what I've seen the ingredients are pretty much the same. So, I just stick the scratch in a rubbermaid bowl and they eat it just fine. Not much waste at all. But, my chickens and ducks get so much other stuff from fruits and veggies and dairy I'm not worried about them not getting enough in their diet. If I couldn't feed them the extra stuff I'd be more picky about finding the perfect feed!

I looked for them there and didn't see any the last few times I was there. All my ducks like the scratch pretty well though. I'll look for pellets again next time I'm there.

I get alot less waste by using pellets. Chickens and ducks both like to dig around in their dish and spill. In fact, that is how I originally started buying pellets. They had dumped their crumbles all over the ground, made a mess- so, I went out and bought a bag of pellets and mixed them. Now its just pellets. Now, even if they spill it, they clean up after themselves nicely, for the most part.

I have the two pigeons too. I feed them on the opposite side of the yard, I use the wild bird seed mix(one of the higher ends, cant remember the name) and the ducks AND chickens come running and will gobble that up. Drives me crazy.

How did it become winter over night?
I am frozen, and I tried to sit outside with the ducks this morning and I am a sissy/wimp and had to come in. Already too cold for me.

Your Cornish need to be fed with a broiler feed, protein that is 20% or so. Layers need 16% protein, and pullets need pullet grower with very little calcium, as they cannot digest the calcuim right if they aren't laying eggs, and it does their kidney's in and takes them longer to lay (from experience) Ducks and turkeys need their own feed too. My chickens think the duck feed is great and try to steal it all the time!

I use Fowlerville Feed. I purchase the Hamilton Brand of feed. The feed store can mix for you, but you have to purchase a larger quantity. And to get all the different species stuff would be hard.

My friend has a layer mix done up at Livingston Feed, 500# I believe. I think it is a mash type feed.

Good luck on your search!
