ChickwannaB, you should be proud of yourself. I think it is going to be a wonderful addition to your chicken keeping arrangements.

thank you...Thank You...THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I love it.

Think I'll park it out by the road and sell it, then make another. It was fun.

YES it worked!! Im so cool.
I have $74.00 into it so far.
Bottom frame is 2x4 pressure treated lumber
Arch is 4 pieces of42" x 8' remesh from Home Depot at about $8 a piece.

I'm going to work on covering it with wire tomorrow. And make a hinged door.
I have to duck just the slightest to walk inside it, then I can stand full upright once in there.
Going to make a small next box, up on legs, like a hutch. And hang a feeder and watered

I am so proud of myself. NO help from hubby at all. He was on the lawnmower.

My chickens and ducks have had much worse than that fish! They get at least one fish a week because it's high in protein. That's when their egg production usually doubles, especially the bantams!

Really, well thats info I didn't have.
I'll have to keep it in mind. My hubby runs a Charter Service on Saginaw Bay. He cleans the fish for people and scraps the guts into a sack to throw away when he gets home. Would the chickens eat guts? We usually just dig a hole and put them in the garden. But it's awful when the dogs find it, dig it up and then roll in it when it's rotten! GAG!!

absolutely not, want close up pics? The leftover piece of pressure treated from the 5.5 foot side was used at the top of the door jam. I notched it and set in into the wire mesh, then held it in place temporarily with a zip tie till I put the uprights in. They aren't treated , (duh!) so I'll hafta slap some Thompson's water sealer on I guess. Would that hurt chickens I wonder?

I guess when most people make a hoop house they use cattle or goat panels, but I've priced those at Menard's, a 16 foot length is over $45 and it would have been too hard for me to work with by myself. I did this for the experience. I joined all the pieces together with cage clamps and needle-nose pliers for the most part. One in every 4" section and 2 at the ends where panels joined. Brads to fasten the panels to the bottom frame-work.

ChickWannaB, congratulations! I'm super impressed. I know that feeling of accomplishment well--"I did it all by myself!" However, my projects end up *looking* like I did them all by myself. At about the age of 9. Not a precocious 9 either. And yet I like to sneak out and just gaze at these constructions with secret pride. (If I could build something like you did, it wouldn't be secret, let me tell you...) My most recent project was to put together a compost bin out of pallets. Not the most complicated task obviously. But after it was done I felt the need to drag the DH out to see it. "It's kinda half-a**'d," I said modestly, hoping he'd disagree. He looked at it, tilted his head, squinted, said, "Maybe a third." Then walked away. I continued to admire it.

He did say later on, "Wood pallets are to you what duct tape is to some people." (Which I totally accepted as a compliment). A couple years ago I fenced in the chicken area (well, there was a lot of existing fencing but some big stretches without it), all by myself, and created several gates out of pallets and chicken wire and scrap lumber. The fencing and the gates objectively look, well, like that same skill-deficient 9 year old put it up without help. But I still get a feeling of accomplishment whenever I look at the fencing and those gates. ::must...acquire...more...pallets::

Anyway, looking at your picture, ChickWannaB, gotta say you've got some real skills. Wear your scars with pride!

Thank you yorkchick (beaming with pride) my husband would help me if I asked, but I didn't this time. I put up pics of the nest box rack I started using the salvaged old metal drawers from a cabinet, got confused and he came out and finished most of it. BUT THE IDEA WAS ALL MINE!! heeheehee I made a chicken tractor too and it's hoaky as all-go-get-out! But it's mine and it works. Only prob is when I want to get the chicks out of it I can't. I hafta tip up one side and reach under with a short handled landing net and get one at a time. Takes all night to get 4 chicks out and back in the hutch inside for the night.

The blood blister really hurts too.

I gotta confess: I got the inspiration from pics here at BYC. Back on the INDEX page, in the very top block, click on Chicken Coops and then under chicken tractors there is one view of a hoop house. I also saw some when I googled "chicken hoop house". I could not have done it without BackyardChickens.com
