I feed mine Layena (I believe by the same company who makes Dumor?). Someone I know uses it for their backyard chickens and they seem to like it. That and whatever yummy scraps that come out of the kitchen that day

Hi,
(Yucky picture warning...my poor babe.....)

My very first little chicken, my OEGB lost a spur this morning, and I'm afraid he may have torn out the root. I treated him with Blue Kote antiseptic, ichthammol antiseptic cream and wrapped it with a bandaid and the sticky stretchy wrap to hold it all on.

Do you think he lost the root here?

Should I put him in a little cage for a while, or will that stress him out? He's used to wandering the yard with his companions. I've never had this sort of thing happen, so am not sure what all to do.

Thanks,
bethanyrae

Whoa there. At first I thought that was a picture of some weird parasite. I am so sorry for your little guy. I am sure that someone will respond soon to help you with this one. You could also repost in the "Emergencies / Diseases / Injuries and Cures" section for the whole community to respond.

How did he manage to tear out his spur? Just curious.

My EE chick keeps pecking at the other chick's vent. Poor little thing has a very prominent vent and when the EE see it winking at her, she just has to go for it. I cleaned off the little victim's bum and dried her out trying to fluff up her backside and camouflage it but no luck.

I think I'm going to have to tape a screen up between them in the brooder and separate them until they feather out more. I only really wanted one new chick but got 2 so she would have a buddy and now I need to separate them.

Question on sexing. The hatchery sexed these chick by their wing feathers. They were a day or 2 old. Wondering if this is effective or if I just paid an extra 50 cents a chick for the guy to make a WAG?

I will cry if my EE is a roo. She is so cute and sweet!

We don't know. I'm assuming for now that he caught it on something. The rest of him looks alright. He goes over fences. No one's been fighting that we can tell. We don't get fighting around here, thank goodness. I'm just so glad he didn't catch his whole foot. We had one do that and die before we found her. So sad.

For the first time we were blessed with 4/4 eggs! Woot!

My Araucana, after I took her egg, got really loud and rowdy! I am sure the whole subdivision could hear her. Bak bak bak BAKOK!!! It was hilarious....I hope my neighbors thought so too.

Did you make it Opa ? Or did you order it if I may ask? The ones I am finding online run upwards of 300.00 ouch...
Thankyou

I ordered mine directly from the manufacturer AXT Electronics I also ordered the electric eye since my door slides up the inside wall of the coop http://axt-electronic.eu/us/shop.html

The myth about being able to tell the sex of a chick by holding it a certain way and observing how it holds its legs is as reliable as holding a gold ring on a string over the chick. The magnetic field generated by will influence the movement of the ring. If the ring rotates clockwise its a pullet and counterclockwise is a rooster. The rotation direction depends upon whose grandfathers best friends cousin was an expert at it. Or was until he lost his string holding hand in a gas powered chicken plucker accident. What happens if you're in south america? The rotation would be the reverse of ours and you'd need to find a new cousin.

The only method with a high degree of accuracy is vent sexing, and because not everyone can learn the technique, and because it isn't totally reliable, hatcheries have spent thousands of dollars developing sex link chickens that the sex is determined by color.
