I just had my first silkie hatch!! It's really light, almost white. Black body, 5 toes...

I can't wait til it dries up and I'll get pics of everyone! Hatching out mixed birds is so much fun! But I can't wait until next year when I'll be able to hatch out full breeds.

btw, the silkie ladies are now sitting on 18 eggs. I need to start marking them and collecting some.

Update:

So we figured out that strange chick is most likely a silkie x Frizzle or bantam cochin!!! If that's the case, it's going to be gorgeous!!! The only roos we have on that side of the runs are a BLRW (too big), an EE x RIR (too big), full size cochin and several silkies. Oh well, it's very odd but very pretty and I think I'll keep it...after I tell Aric haha. We won't have money to spend at Chickenstock so I should be able to keep something lol

To add to my advice on getting better pics through the glass of an incubator...I picked up a small LED flashlight. Works wonders!

I just got word that Townline is back ordered on their meat bird orders AGAIN this year. So we will be sweating it to have birds in time to enter them for our Fair's small market auction. I need a reliable on time source for meaties. Any suggestions?

I just moved my "going into the 3rd week" Jerseys into a coop yesterday with heat lamp. I knew it would get cold last night but figured they can stay right under the heat lamp and stay warm. My husband has had enough of chicks in the basement and didn't want to push it.

1muttsfan...I see you on the Orpington page....do you have English or American?? I have 5 part English from Renie's peeps. I thought I kept 1 black roo, 2 blue pullets, 1 black pullet and 1 splash pullet...but the splash has a very pink comb. Not sure if it is a pullet or roo. Compared to the black roo....it would look like a pullet but it doesn't look like the other pullets comb either. Guess I'll have to wait to see.
I've decided I for sure will not be able to tell what I've got with the Jerseys for bringing to Chickenstock (if I make it). I'm going to have to wait to sort them out another month I think.
The man that came and bought my American Orps told me if you hang a chick upside down...the roos will pull in their wings tight to body but the pullets won't. I think he said it worked on 5-6 wks. old. Is this a old farmers tale?? Can't see how it would be true but so he said.

Hillbilly Hen, I have been meaning to E you, the Welsummer rooster we bought from you is indeed very handsome!!! did you de-spur him? If so how did you do it? Have seen a few different ways on you tube, My EE roo has spurs about 3in long. Never goes after any one but they do look wicked. Your roo is now king of the roost as the other rooster I gave her is very young and a bit timed (not with the lady's ) They have all adjusted very well. Thanks a gain. Mary

Hi, fifelakelooper, I just read an article about that in the Backyard Poultry, it is right about 50% of the time, I tried the hang them by the shoulders thing and got 2 roos and 2 hens. 50-50, they said the best way is trying to check the vent at 1 day, but of course that takes a lot of experience. soooo unless you get really good at vent sexing, you have a poor chance . I am going to try if my hen ever hatches her brood,

ooooh fire ants!

We had to watch out for them in Tennessee when I lived there!~

When I went down for a visit with my husband a couple years ago, I actually wasnt paying attention and stood right on top of their nest!!! I didnt notice until, well, my leg was on fire! I looked down and my leg was COVERED in ants, biting burning ants! Thankfully for me, I was very near the lake and ran and jumped in and was able to scrub them off my leg. However, the bites and swelling was crazy!

Nice fall morning out there! I fed the crew, and am waiting on the coffee. I slept in this morning and have a feeling I am running late. Im not- but I never sleep this late. I already fed everyone, critter-wise, and everything is caught up...but still, I hate that feeling like I am late...

I hope you all have a wonderful day.

oh p.s.
Ferret...hahahahhaaha, sort of makes me want to go buy bubbles, just to watch the hens reaction...

Good morning, beautiful and sunny here finally (although only 48 degrees brr). Lots of heat lamps still running here! My little 6 wk olds are starting to get out of the box brooder in the garage, they got a taste of outdoor life when it was warmer last week and want back outside bad. Too cold and wet for the last few days for little ones, though.
Fifelake I was cruising the imported orp thread looking for blue coloring info. Wow those are some big, fluffy, beautiful birds . I really loved the look of orps I have had in the past, but those english birds are more of everything. The gold laced are really striking.
Pokster there is another michigan thread BYCer that just moved to Escanaba recently. There was a swap last month in Trenary (which I missed), but I think there are other swaps over that way too.
