we'll see.....

Hatching out chicks today and the good news is that the power hasn't gone out this time during my hatching like it has the last 3 times LOL Have about 14 hatched right now including a bunch of varieties of Polish, 2 silkies and 1 speckled sussex. Looks like a black and a lavendar silkie

I'm waiting to find out for sure on the varieties as they are new to me.
Excited for ChickenStock! Only 2 more weeks and we all get to hang out!!!

ducks need niacin more than chickens, if you have brewers yeast you can add it to *unmedicated* chick starter and it'll work (just sprinkle on top like putting pharm on spegetti). if the feed store's closed, cook some whole grains for it for tomorrow and head over on monday.

oooo I want different colored silkies! Something other than black and buff!!

I so far have 7 bantams, cochin and frizzles. More hatching out next week! I didn't get to hatch out what I wanted with everything going on lately but it's been fun anyway.

Thank you...that's what I'll do. I 'll actually cook it now and have it ready when my husband comes home with it tomorrow:) Thanks for everyone's input on my new "rouen"...LOL

Ducklings need more Niacin than chickens. If you search BYC it will tell you how much per gallon. The better thing is Purina Flock Raiser and some poultry vitamins. I used "Save a Chick" from TSC the first week. A good water bowl is a cool whip container with a hole cut in the lid so the duckling can stick it's head in without getting soaked.

Something must have happened to the mother. The old stand by for me is baby food until I get real feed. I don't do it often but creamed corn works too. I just don't do it often unless it's organic because canned foods are too high in sodium. Ducklings at almost any age can eat the feed you give your chickens, just be sure there's plenty of water. Keep in mind, ducks are VERY messy creatures! Even just one! Newspaper won't do you much good so you might want to pick up some pine shavings or something.

If you were closer I'd say I'd hang onto it til it grows up if you wanted to. If you have anymore questions or concerns, I'm no expert, but I do have 24 ducks of all shapes and sizes lol

While fishing a mama and 11...yes 11 babies went by. She did a really good job keeping an eye on all of them!

Ducklings same as chicks are much happier with a friend. Duck math is like chicken math.

Mish is right, it's better to have more than just one. I should have some mixed ducklings at chickenstock if you're going.

I was just reading another thread and discovered another advantage to living in Michigan. Ants, fire ants to be specific. A fellow BYCer in Tennessee just lost a hen to fire ants. She had been eating them and in addition to numerous bites to the body her throat was filled with them.

Now lets recap. Lots of snow- Con Only one rarely seen poisonous snake- Pro Below freezing winter temperatures- Con No scorpions- Pro Very few spiders- Pro Very few ticks- Pro
No chiggars- Pro Need I go on?

Fire ants will swarm just about anything, which is why you need to be careful where you sit. at a birthday party 2 years ago a girl sat on a nest, and got swarmed, her entire back was a moving mass of red angry ants. needed anantihistamine shot from the number of bites.
