So your hens lay in the coop all year round? I remember I had this problem a couple years ago. A hen that would not lay anywhere but the coop and the coop too hot to be inside in the day time. Does everyone just cool the coop down enough for the hens to go in in the day?
I have been fencing my hen under the tree on the grass during the hotest part of the day, but today, it was stressful to her because she had not laid her egg yet.

My coop is actually cooler inside than it is outside, due to the thick insulation and fans running 24/7. My ISA who has been gifting me with an egg almost every day laid a huge egg in an outside box in the run. It is 2/3 larger than any of her previous eggs. Still no eggs from any of the other hens though.

A fan and a box outdoors for laying.........that is what is needed in the heat of Summer! Thank you~

Does anybody know what these are? My lot backs up to the freeway and these are all over back there.

So....here's a question for ya'll. I've got two silkie hens that have all the sudden decided NOW is the time to be broody!!!

They do NOT want to get off thier little nests. So should I kick them off of the nests or will they be ok in this heat? Here's a picture of my grumpy girls lol

Just letting everyone know that my husband has decided NOT to get the ablation heart procedure after we met and discussed options with the surgeon. You know how you listen to the TV ads for medicines ? They list all the possible side effects and dangers of the drug which sometimes sound worse than the symptom being treated. Well....the surgeon told Dh and I all the things that could go wrong (he told us of 9-----BAD ones) and then he said that data shows those that had the procedure done lived no longer than those that did not...AND...that he could get cardio converted "as needed" and it would not hurt his heart (which is not what the cardiologist had said)...and...he decided not to go forward with it. I felt the same. If he goes into atrial fib every other year and has to be cardio converted....so be it. Just wanted to share this news since I had posted earlier in the month about his health problem. I know he is relieved. We went to this consultation with the surgeon today...having in mind the scheduling of surgery...but the surgeon was nice enough to discuss for a good 20 minutes what would take place, the dangers, etc.
So...all is well.

Haven't heard the weather for tomorrow yet...I am assuming it is another record heat day. I cleaned the coop this morning prior to going to Traverse city and the sweat was rolling into my eyes and dripping off my nose. None of that "glowing" for me.....I just plain drip sweat.

fife lake - I'm glad your husband will not have to have the surgery. I hope he continues to feel good.

One of my chickens was doing the egg song tonight! She was just standing out in the yard with her flock-mates buck, buck, bucawing away for a good minute or more. I hope this means I'll be seeing my first egg soon!

I did go out to the yard where she was singing and looked around in case I missed seeing her squat but no egg. I got excited at first because I saw this little round thing in the grass, but it was just a crab apple from the neighbor's tree.

I got a new clip on fan for the coop to replace the little battery operated one I was using. This one circulates a lot more air, even on low speed. I can't believe how much I worry about them out in this heat. I spend all day, distracted by thinking of ways to make them more comfortable.

babigyrl22Ok you need to have some type of peace offering to get this woman out of your hair. It's too hot for all her negative effort. I think you mentioned that she wasn't interested in free eggs but is there something else you could do? Nice little note, invite them over for dinner and wine.

I have a neighbor that I KNOW wishes I didn't have chickens but she tolerates us. I think she does becuase I am super nice, she gets free books (i work in publishing), free eggs, her husband and her friends think my coop is super cool (so she brings them over for random viewings...which makes her super interesting

) I tease her often that she is going to come home one day and I'll have a couple of goats.....HAHA. [url :

No offering. I don't swim in the married end of the pool.

Our hens did the buc buc bucwing thing when there was a ground predator like a cat in the yard. But I hope in your case an egg is close!
Let me know if the fan works! I am curious about that!
