We live in ER and plan on going. We're just outside of town so we're allowed to have animals but we're still going to go to support those we know that live in town.

Please keep us posted on how this meeting goes. I still have so many questions about city ordinances vs. MRTFA. It is too hot to get on my soapbox, but how frustrating that people can have multiple dogs who bark incesstantly (not to mention the stench of dog poo baking in the sun since it is never cleaned up!), but a few quiet, well kept chickens and people act like we are entering the end times!!!

I had heard this is sometimes an alarm call but there was nothing around and the other pullets were just milling around her scratching and pecking as usual. I have my fingers crossed.

The fan worked great! It was $18 at Bed Bath and Beyond. It has a big clip on it so I can clip it to the coop and point it in any direction I want. The girls were a little hesitant to go into the coop while it was on so I turned it off until everyone was inside and I had the door closed. When I turned it back on they just sat on their roost right in front of the fan, feathers gently blowing in the breeze. It was cute.

I work in Eaton Rapids at the hospital (lived in Erap for 8yrs though) but live in Holt. I would love to hear about the outcome of this meeting.

Living the Simple Life - Welcome to BYC MI thread! So nice to have you here.

I really feel for those of you without AC in the house. Maybe it's because I'm an old geezer, but I don't think I could survive these temps without it. I had it put in the year after I bought my house, that would have been 2000, when we had a heat wave like this. I don't use it unless it is really humid and the temps get over 80, but when they do it's a God send. At night when the humidity is low I turn it off and open all the windows for a good night's sleep.

I got another huge egg this morning. Someone likes to lay before 10:00 a.m. I'm wondering now if it is Scarlett. Her first four or five eggs were the size of Kroger eggs, but these last two have been much larger. I know that happens as they get older, but going from a small egg one day to a huge one the next? Maybe one of the BRs has started laying. It's not dark enough to be a Marans and all the other girls are EEs.

The heat index is supposed to be 105 for the next couple of days. Keep your babies cool. I keep my fans going all the time. A large box fan in one window and a smaller double fan in the other, both blowing air in. They are tilted upward to keep the air by the roosts moving. I tried turning one around to blow air out but it didn't seem to make a difference so I decided it was better to have hot air moving than not. At night when it cools down some they seem comfortable. I also leave the "screen" door open 24/7 to allow for more ventilation. The screen is made of 1/8" stainless steel with holes about 1/2" in diameter. Nothing can get through it except bugs.

Not doing anything more strenuous today than baking cookies for our church soup kitchen dinner tonight, a little vacuuming and chicken chores.

YAY for 4 day weekends. It was pretty nice having a couple extra days off. Having a yard sale in this heat though, not so much fun. I got sunburnt in the shade

Now I have a sweet farmers tan on my arms lol.
This heat sucks alot. Been trying to get our coop built, but its been 80 at night still around here. I just don't feel like doing anything in this weather. That leads me to a question though, how old should my girls be before I move them out into the coop. They are 5 week old silkies and are currently living in our basement ( which is nice and cool in this heat). The are getting their feathers pretty quickly now and I just don't want to move them out to early.

I moved mine when they were about 4-5 weeks old. But it was about 70 degrees during the day and 40 at night when I did. The heat can do more harm than the cold (where they can just huddle, or a lamp can be provided). I may suggest holding off until this brutal heat wave is over. I have another group of four weekers in the basement that I'd love to move out too, but I don't think they can handle this heat.

Well that should be just fine then, considering we don't have their coop finished yet. I was concerned about moving them out to early. I had been taking them out to run around daily last week, but in this weather they are not going anywhere, Well except for when they escape their box and I find them roaming around the basement.

Gosh, I wish I had heard about the fan earlier! I will try that! Do you know how much your temperature was reduced?
