Opa better hurry up and get back. I think his random ramblings peeps are wondering what happened. The thread went silent. I think he was the one keeping it alive.

OH! Well, I ended up calling a friend from work whose mother raised chickens, and he said that he thought she was going to lay but wasn't happy with the nesting area... SOOO, I went over to my neighbor and got some straw, as I haven't gotten any of my own yet, brought it back to the coop, opened it up and she pops her head over the box and looks at me, so I pulled the box to me, and guess what? Yup, a nice pretty pinkish/tanish egg... SO, I put the straw in, moved her egg on to it, and let her sit back on it...

SOOOO, I am going to steal it in the morning when she comes out to eat... Think she'll get mad? lol

Woo Hoo! Got my very first Black Copper egg today!

I noticed that one of my two FBCM pullets had gotten a very red comb and wattles and figured she was about ready to start laying. This afternoon I got the most beautiful DARK egg. I really hadn't expected the first eggs to be very dark according to what I had been reading, and considered I could even get a hen who just didn't lay really dark eggs, but look at this! These pullets come from Jerry Canfield in Ada and he told me he culled any light egg layers. Woo Hoo! Now I just need to get three more FBCM hens to complete the flock. I think I'm going to be sorry I got rid of my FBCM roosters, but it sure is quiet in the old coop now. So anyway, I laid the eggs on a little shelf in the coop while I was cleaning the poop boards and I accidentally hit the dark egg with the end of my cleaning hoe and cracked it.

I was able to hide the crack to take the picture, but geez Louise! My first gorgeous egg and I break it!

Well I just got a good bit of exercise from rounding up the white rock cockerels for a weigh in. They're 11 weeks old now, and I wanted to see how much they weigh so I can start thinking about sending them to freezer camp. I purposefully bought them as meat birds rather than cornish x mutants. They're excellent at foraging, very active birds! But catching chickens that don't want be be caught?! WHEW! I hope my neighbors weren't watching, I probably looked like a moron

Anyway, of the five I caught, three were 3lbs 10oz, one 3lbs 12oz, and one 3lbs 8 oz. Pretty similar, actually! They were not happy getting plonked on my soap scale. Took a few tries to get an accurate weight! When I let 'em go I tossed them a handful of oats, hopefully food helped them forget the whole ordeal!

congratulations chickmate I got my hens from him to. My hens are not laying yet can hardly wait now that I have seen how pretty they will be. You will most likely be able to get a roo from him next year his hens seem to put out a lot of rosters.

I was able to give away one roo but kept 1 he is so pretty. I do have a 7 or8 week old EE you can have. his dady is a good watch dog. beautiful green legs and nice puffy cheeks. don't want to breed him with your marans though

Hi Chickmate, sounds like you're somewhere in the same area as I am. Glad to know that. Anyway a client of mine who travels that area was teasing me and saying he saw my chickens headed for the Z-bridge. Apparently there is someone on S13 who has chickens. A guy who has as old junk yard or something. I usually drive too fast down there to site see! Always see wild geese & their young but never a chicken.

Put a fake egg or golfball in when take the real one. Mine have been laying for about 2 wks. now and I still have the golfballs in the nests.
